There’s something about animation movies-they make me immensely happy for no good reason. Now what happens when you combine a fairy tale type of story with a cute little animated mouse.......................?Hang
on!
This ’tale’ actually starts with a good natured rat,Roscuro(Dustin Hoffman) who’s accompanying his ’shipmate’ Pietro(Charles Shaughnessy) to the kingdom of Dor.This land happens to be famous for it’s ’Royal Soup Day’.The two friends are delighted to attend this special event, although Pietro is having a tough time trying to keep Roscuro away from scurrying off to pounce into soups.Unfortunately, the inevitabl
The Tale of Despereaux

e happens & the rat does end up falling into a soup. But not just any soup, this was the Queen’s(Patricia Cullen) broth! The Royal gets hysterical & finally passes away due to shock. The King and Princess Pea(Emma Watson) are distraught & aren’t able to cope up with their loss.Out of depression, the King declares a public statement that brings dark clouds upon the Kingdom, the people, the kitchen staff, mice,Roscuro & the Princess herself. At this desperate time,a mouse is born!A very handsome fellow,Despereaux(Matthew Broderick) is a ’bit’ different from his clan. He’s got abnormally large ears and is very brave. His parents, brother & friends are worried as to why he doesn’t cower in fear. They’re also troubled by his constant interaction with humans & his interest in reading. The heads of the mouse community bring about a decision concerning Despereaux which ends up teaching all the main characters in this fairy tale what ’forgiveness’,’courage’ & ’honour’ truly means.
This movie is based on an award winning children’s fantasy book authored by Kate DiCamillo.I haven’t read the book,so I won’t be able to compare/contrast the two.Sigourney Weaver narrates this whole enchanting story & she’s done a perfect job(as is expected of her).Matthew Broderick sounds very cute as Despereaux while Emma Watson of the ’Harry Potter’ fame has used her natural English Rose accent well.Dustin Hoffman’s rat doesn’t appear much on screen, but he’s Dustin:always fabulous no matter what. The whole movie’s computer animated and I’m pleased to say it doesn’t hurt the eyes. The plot is very fairy taleish, but it definitely left me feeling warm inside.
Final grade- A+;there are many other characters here I haven’t mentioned, but by doing so I would be giving away the whole story! This is one to watch and find out.Prescribed for animation lovers only.
