Pros:
good story, close to the book as possible
Cons:
slow, may be difficult to enjoy without reading the book

If you are tired of watching fast flashy action and want to watch a slower more serious treasure hunt, with a historical angle, this is for you. Forget about comparing the movie to the book, in my opinion
a book is always more satisfying. Compare it to MI3 or RV or some other so called blockbuster movies, DVC is better. Of course it is no Raiders of the Lost Ark or Gladiator but if you want to see this genre of movie you should go watch it.

Since the movie has a lot of details it would be good idea to read the book before watching it. But if the story from the book is fresh in your mind you might not enjoy the movie as some details are omitted in the movie. There is only so much that can be shown in a 2 and ½ hour movie. My suggestion is read the book then go watch the movie after a month or so that you recall the details as you watch the movie. But if you are going to see the movie immediately then read about 100 odd pages of the book so that you are not overwhelmed by the all the details being shown in movie.

As for the controversy surrounding the movie, to me it seemed that the movie was putting forth the idea of diversity of early Christianity and the humanity of Christ. So it makes the Church look bad as the Church is trying to unify Christianity under one set of beliefs and emphasizes the divinity of Christ, as any religious organization would want to do. After watching the movie it seems that only fundamentalists doctrinaires would be opposed to the movie, as it does not toe their exact line of religious doctrine. Rather I think that the movie tries to promote Christian philosophy (not the Church) as accepting of diversity and being humane.
