Not even "thoda magic" in this love story

I have been a fan of Kunal Kohlis earlier movies Hum Tum and Fanaa. Both were deservedly blockbusters. But the same Kunal has disappointed big time with Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic.

As soon as I saw the promos of TMK, they looked very stale and confused. Hence, I went with the least expectations for the film.Even with the least expectations, I didn't like the film at all. The 1st story set in the 1960s, starts off well, but then gets its tone and art direction wrong. Except for a stray mention of trams etc, there is nothing such that you are transported to the India of 1960s. Shahid and Priyanka both give listless performances in the movie. There is hardly any chemistry they share and hence this love story between a top actress and a struggling musician fails to touch your heart. Prachi Desai gets wasted in this part.

Then story abruptly fast forwards to 2012 in London. This one is fairly engaging and both the leads give good performances. The chemistry they share in this part is sizzling finally. You feel the film is getting better. The track of Shahid with his ex-girlfriend and their breakup is good. This part gets the lingo and setting right. The characters are well defined.

But then again the film abruptly goes back in time to 1910, the pre-independence era. Here the director has tried to put comedy into the freedom movement which fails miserably. Shahid overacts in this part and his shayaris after a point get tedious. Priyanka is ok in this part. The supporting cast also is ok.

The climax is a big let down and makes the entire movie pointless. Its because of these loopholes in screenplay and lack of good emotional quotient that the movie fails to connect.

Music by Sajid-Wajid is excellent and one of the few good things in the film. The songs have been picturised well too although the choreography seems odd at places. The dialogues are fine, especially the Shayaris where Shahid tries aping AAMIR from FANAA, which gets tedious after a point.

Overall, TMK is a case of bade naam, buri film. This movie probably wont last for more than a week in theatres. Hopefully, talented actors like Shahid and Priyanka will get a better film in future to display their sizzling chemistry which sparkled in Kaminey. My rating: 1.5/5
