Introduction:

Music director duo Jatin-Lalit were, at one time, established young composers in the Hindi film industry. Their career was started in 1989. They sang for R D Burman in Parichay and went on to record a few more tunes in the years that followed. Their family wanted Lalit to pursue studies. However the brothers started work together and composed the music for their first private album, Rhythm is Love.

They made debut with the movie Yaara Dildaara in 1991 which included a few songs from their private album released earlier that year. Then came Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander in 1992. After that they were established as Music Directors in the Hindi Film Industry. Although Jatin-Lalit have composed some beautiful numbers but since the last few years their albums have been mediocre. They are best when they compose romantic numbers. In my opinion, even, Hum-Tum album was nothing extra-ordinary. Lets see if they can bring the magic of Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander or day even DDLJ in their upcoming movies(???).

My favorite Ten tracks: (Tracks are in random. Numbering doesn’t denote their rank)

1)Chand Taare-Abhijeet-Yes Boss-1997

Many of you might take this song as a musically normal number but in my opinion this was a great song by Jatin-Lalit. Specially piano in the song is played very well. Starts off as normal number with Abhijeet singing and in the middle the song becomes slightly fast. A good peppy number.

2)Bin Tere Sanam-Udit Narayan, Kavita Subramaniam-Yaara Dildara-1991

Frankly speaking I didn’t even know this song until I heard D.J. Suketu’s Bin tere Sanam-remix. Then I inquired from my friends about having the original song and finally my one friend had only this track. I heard the song and I must say it’s a good composition, since this was their debut album. Udit Narayan as usual sings very well along with Kavita Subramaniam who gives him good support. The song begins with Guitar and then the drums take over similar to Bappi Da’s compositions and after a few seconds Kavitaji starts singing “aa aa aa” along with Udit. The vocals blend perfectly with the music and the song begins hummable.

3)Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaaye-Sonu Nigam-Sarfarosh—1999

Patriotic song and Jatin-Lalit—A rare combination and that is why I have included this song. Starts off as a traditional number from Rajasthan then Sonu takes over and sings it to the best. The music is really great with good support from Roop-Kumar Rathod.

4)Jab Kisiki Taraf-Kumar Sanu-Pyar to Hona Hi Tha-1998

One of the best romantic numbers from Kumar Sanu as well as Jatin-Lalit. O.K I do agree the start of the song has been totally copied from Bryan Adams-“Have u really loved a women” but the rest song is beautiful. Hear it once and you will come to know why I have included this song.

5)Title- Udit Narayan-Kuch Kuch Hota Hai-1998

Another of their romantic numbers this time it’s the title track of KKHH. A soulful number with great lyrics and cool music and sang very well by Udit Narayan. The slower version of KKHH is also pretty cool too but I didn’t want to include two songs from the same movie.

6)Waada Raha Sanam- Abhijeet, Alka Yagnik-Khiladi-1992

A fast sad number from Khiladi. This song came from Jatin-Lalit quite early from their career. Once again a start off with Alka Yagnik singin and Abhijeet also gives good support to her. A good song which can be heard at any time.

7)Ae Kaash ke- Kumar Sanu-Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa -1994

I included this song in my list of Kumar Sanu’s best and I had to include this in the duo-s best too. This one is an awesome romantic number and this is why I like the music of Jatin-Lalit. Starts of with music and background chorus for about half a min and then Kumar Sanu sings this song at his best. The music and his voice go on so smoothly that makes me hear this song twice everytime my winamp plays it.

8)Najane Mere Dilko-Udit Narayan, Lata Mangeshkar-DDLJ-1995

How can I forget this song. Another of romantic numbers and for this album these guys won an award as well. Starts off as it would suggest being a sad song with a nostalgic feeling attached to it. But then Udit Narayan starts singing and the music becomes fast. Good support is given by Lataji as well. Great song.

9)Hum Tum-Babul Supriyo, Alka Yagnik-Hum Tum-2004

After KKHH and PTHHT, the music directors lost their way. They gave music for some films in this span of time but I guess it was not appreciated. Then they came back with Hum Tum, which, in my opinion as a whole is also an average buy. But there is one song which I love to hear everytime and that is the title track. The song has not been appreciated much commercially but indeed it’s a great song and Babul Supriyo along with Alka Yagnik have done a fabulous job. Not to mention with Jatin-Lalit composing a romantic number it has got to be the best. A soulful number

10)Pehla Nasha-Udit Narayan, Sadhna Sargam-Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander-1992

My list would be incomplete without this song. I like the original composition and the remix as well. Starts of with paino and then the real music starts. The music is awesome. U just can’t hear this song once u got to hear it more. A great composition.

I had to include some more songs but since the list if for 10 songs only I have restricted myself. As always do RRC my rvu.
