A fabric of Dreams…assorted with a few realities…. Hindi movies sell dreams to their viewers.

. Lush Green fields…clear blue skies…snow…mountains… pastel color costumes…Picturesque locations… or

Hundred dancers…designer dresses…Lavish sets…dance movements…smiling faces…Picture Perfect…

Somewhere between the dreams, Reality hits you…

1)Bharat Humko Jaan se Pyaara Hain- Roja

Terrorists(funded by coalition of neighboring and western countries) have kidnapped a computer engineer called Rishi. They try to burn Indian Flag in front of him. A handcuffed Rishi jumps on the burning flag, in a fearless attempt to extinguish the fire. Rishi’s clothes catch fire… we see the flames…the burning flag…the fighter Indian.…. a spirit that the terrorists could not kill…

The song ‘Bharat Humko jaan se pyara hain’goes on in the background, with the rising passionate voices of the chorus-“toote nahi apna watan…”.

Rishi stops the fire, and survives the burns. This scene and this song picturized with a clear sense of stunning reality by Mani Ratnam have to top my list.

Far away from reality…Cinema takes you in the world of Dreams and Romance…

2)Pehla Nasha – Jo Jita wohi Sikandar*

It’s a cute romantic song.  The slow motion has a great effect. Aamir and Ayesha looked cute on the screen. But, the quiet, distant moments picturized on Aamir’s elder brother(in the movie) and his girlfriend were the best ones.

3)Ho gaya Tujh ko to pyar sajna- Dilwale Dulhniya Le jayenge *

Simran- “Raj, tum meri shaadi mein aaoge na?”

Raj- “Nahi Simran, main nahi aaunga.”

It’s a different matter that Raj most probably ends up attending Simran’s wedding(Since he happens to be the groom).

But the song that comes right after this ‘turning point’ scene is a romantic classic. Raj and Simran are on the way to their respective homes, engrossed in each other’s thoughts….

When the Dreams Fade away and Loneliness takes over.

4)Dil kehta hain chal unse mil- Akele hum akele tum

The song comes when the estranged hero and heroine are missing each other, but are unable to express themselves due to a lot of reasons.

The song is picturized with the required sensitivity. It’s sad but not too melodramatic.

A look at the Black and White era…

5)Achha ji main haari chalo maan jao na- Kaala Paani

This funny and romantic song has passed the test of time.

It is picturized on two of the best-looking stars of all times- Madhubala and Dev Anand.

It’s time for some Humor!

6)Aaj hamare dil mein- Hum aap ke hain kaun

He sings- “hothon ki yeh hasi’ etc. She blushes and smiles. ‘He’ is Aloknath. ‘She’ is Reema Lagoo.

It doesn’t get funnier than this!

I have nothing against the song-n-dance wedding celebrations, in fact I like traditional Indian weddings a lot, but just consider this-

Aloknath is the samdhii who is singing praises of samdhan Reema Lagoo, who incidentally was his college-time crush. They blush, smile, try to look shy etc.

On a serious note, the concept of a family sitting together and singing songs was excellent. Had it been picturized differently(probably with a different lyrics, and without Aloknath), it would have been normal. By the way, the end of the song where Reema sings a few lines about her daughter is really touching. Its not funny, its very emotional.

(Had she been singing praises of Aloknath, it would have been hilarious!).

7)Jise Dhoondta hu mein- Dil Chahta Hain

It’s a funny song where the  ‘filmy’ trends of yesteryear have been recreated in a light mood. The choreography is innovative and the concept is cool.

Dancing- Bollywood style ….

8)Pyar ki Kashti mein- Kaho na pyar hain

A big ship in the sea, a bunch of youngsters dancing on the ship to a catchy tune, a fresh, trendy look, technically flawless picturization, and starring Shree Hrithik Roshan- enough reasons to add this one in my list.

9)P P Piya - Prem Diwane

This is a low profile retro track, from a movie called ‘Prem Diwane’.  If I recall correctly, it stars Vivek Mushran and Pooja Bhatt.  It’s a typical peppy college romance number. The dance steps are different and worth watching.

Cho chweeet.…

10)Om Shanti Om- Remix version

Though I am against the ‘remix and video’ trend, I can make exception for this one song.

The cute video features adorable babies and toddlers who are playing in their nursery.

Before the song starts, the kids are asleep, and when the ayah leaves, the cutie babies get up one by one- to play, to dance, to cry, to smile, to walk the baby-steps…The video takes you to the kids’ world.

Huh, that completes the list!  Comments and suggestions are welcome.
