A picture speaks a thousand words. and thereby we give form to music in innumerable songs and in so many ways. what do you feel when you hear a piece of music. you get vivid images. as if you are in the midst of a garden filled with tulips(?). ala Amitabh and Rekha in Silsila. or perhaps you feel at home in Goa with your buddies. ala DCH.

What I intend to say is,  what images we conjure up today when we hear these songs are immediately those that we have seen on screen. This selection of songs is based only on this quality. The ability of the sounds to conjure up the images that you saw on screen as readily as they do.

For instance, when you think of Ek Do Teen, how many of you remember the Anil Kapoor Version? Did you know that there was one? Or for instance when you think of the song. Hum apke hain koun.(hum it once and seee)  what comes to your mind. picture perfect images of the stars. the caressing cinematography and the awesome concept of a Sooraj Barjatya. move ahead to'In haatom mein lagado mehndi, baandh shagun ka dhaaga' and you see Madhuri in that yellow as gold dress. in Mayi ni .

As for the regional songs, believe me, Mani Rathnam had made his mark long before he made Roja. Geethanjali was his best ever.(will perhaps come up with a review) and then there is this Ram Gopal Verma movie called Antham(Telugu) / Drohi(Hindi) which he made before he learnt all his gimmicks and his publicity stunts. those were the days when Mr. Verma would not talk about his films AT ALL. until he released it. and so it showed. all his effort. although the movie was no great shakes. the song'Nee navvu cheppindhi' shot ever so subtly. to show a budding romance.will remain with me forever. it was shot somewhere in the forests of Sri Lanka or so I heard.

And then Barsaat. Noo dont go back to Raj kapoor. aaj kal ke zamaane mein. Raj Kapoor's picturization is passe. although a special mention must be made of his'Mera Joota hain japaani' . Anyways. Bobby Deol and Twinkle Khanna in Barsaat. forget their faces now. I know there are a lot of people who dont like that junglee face or whatever. think of the song. Santosh Sivan shows here, why he is such a brilliant cameraman. an ordinary location, made spectacular with the use of right colors and the extraordinary camera work with the use of mirrors. one of my personal favourites.

Amitabh all the way in Manzilein Apni jagah hain. that is if you do not consider the audio.(where Kishore Kumar goes beyond even perhaps Amitabh).

The last three songs are sheer magic. and anyone who has watched these songs will remember. those first day first shows. those seetis. that frenzy. and the charisma.

And before we forget, the very very beautiful and the very very very graceful Waheeda Rehman in Aaj Phir Jeene ki tamanna hain. shows us why the visuals portray more than the words ever can.
