Well my MS Id itself should have given you an indication that I am a very proud and patriotic Indian, like any other normal Indian and I hope like most of my fellow MS ians.

Anyway here are some popular patriotic songs in Hindi movies which I have always loved listening to again and again. They really touch my heart and soul, and I always eagerly look to Aug 15th and Jan 26th, since that?s the only time I can get to listen to these songs on DD.

Kar Chale Hum Fida Jaano Tan Saathiyo

This song from the 1961 movie Haqeeqat is the crown jewel of all the patriotic songs. It?s the best after Lata?s? Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon?. Well it cannot be otherwise when you have the formidable trio of Mohd. Rafi, Madan Mohan and Kaifi Azmi behind this song. What lyrics, they just touch your heart. I must have listened to this song umpteen times and even watched it on TV, but its difficult for me to hold back my emotions when listening to this. I get a lump in my throat watching this song. This is the best tribute that can be paid to our Indian soldier. One of the most poignant scenes in this song is when the injured Balraj Sahni who has lost his legs in the battle, salutes his officer on crutches. That one scene makes me want to raise my hand in salute to the brave men on the border. Consider this lyric

?Saas Damti Gayi Nabz Jamti Gayi,

Phir Bhi Badthe Kadam Ko Na Rukne Diya,

Kat Gaye Sar Hamaare To Kuch Kum Nahin

Sar Himalay Ka Humne Na Zukhne Na Diya?

It means? Our breath is faltering and we are tiring, yet we have not stopped from moving ahead, othing is lost if our heads were to be cut off, but we shall never allow the Himalayas to bend its head?. Enough to inspire patriotism in even the most cynical person.

Ae Mere Pyaare Watan

Another brilliant song sung by Manna Dey for the movie Kaabuliwaala, and superbly tuned by the maestro Salil Choudhury. This song is sure to be felt by any person who has left India and is staying in another country. Just consider this part

?Chod Kar Teri Zameen Ko Door Aa Pahunce Hai Hum,

Phir Bhi Hai Yeh Hi Tamanna Tere Jeron ki Kasam

Hum Jahan Paida Hue. Us Jagah Pe Hi Nikale Dum?.

It means?I have left your land, and reached the far shores. But I swear by you, that my desire is to breathe my last where I was born?.

Very much true, wherever we are and whatever we are, most of us would love to spend our last days in our home land. Never has a man?s yearning for his motherland been captured so beautifully.

Ae Mere Vatan Ke Logo

This is not exactly a movie song, but deserves to be on this list just because its such a profoundly touching song. Its said Pandit Nehru was moved to tears when Lata sang this song. Listening to this song, you can very well understand why. Its one of the best tributes to the Indian soldier, celebrating their bravery, selflessness and sacrifice. Listen to this part especially

?Jab Desh Mein Thi Diwali,

Voh Khel Rahe The Holi

Jab Hum Baite The Gharon Mein

Voh Jhel Rahe The Goli

Kya Log The Voh Diwanee

Kya Log The Voh Abhimaani?

It means that while we were celebrating Diwali and safely sitting in our homes, these men were out there fighting and dodging bullets. Yes here we are sitting comfortably in our AC offices and Cyber cafes, cribbing about every small problem, while the men at our borders are there fighting a battle for survival at every step. Sometime ago I read a review on this song on some website, saying that the reviewer was not impressed by this song as it contained all Urdu words like Watan, Qurbani which were not Indian enough. I am sick and disgusted that such idiots call themselves as patriotic Indians.

Ae Vatan, Ae Vatan Humko Teri Kasam

This song is from the 60?s movie Shaheed, which is one of the best Bhagat Singh movies, before The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Manoj?Bharat? Kumar gives a superb performance as Bhagat Singh in this movie, and Prem?Nasty? Chopra puts in a surprisingly good performance as RajGuru. This song is song in a chorus, and comes towards the end of the movie when Bhagat Singh is about to be hanged with Sukhdev and Rajguru. In fact the movie again has the best version of?Meri Rang De Basanti? with lines like?Is Mitti Ko Pehan Shivaji Lekar Apne Aan Pe?. The best line comes in the beginning of the song

?Doli Chadke to Laathe Hai Dulhan Sabhi

Hanske Har Koi Phansi Chadega Nahin?

Every one brings his bride home, but none shall accept the gallows with a smile. This line sums up the persona of Bhagat Singh, who gave up his life with a smile for his countrymen. When I look at today?s politicians, who make other people give up their lives for their kursi, I can only wonder?

Chodo Kal Ki Baatein

Superb patriotic song again from the movie?Hum Hindustani? starring Sunil Dutt, sung by Mukesh. This song urges Indians not to dwell too much in the past and look into the future instead. This was in keeping with Nehru?s speech on Temples of Modern India.

Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyaara Hain

A very nice and touching patriotic song by Hariharan from the movie Roja, and well tuned by A.R.Rahman. This song reflects on the unity and integrity of the nation. It deals with the ability of the Mandir to co exist with the Masjid and the Hindu with the Muslim.

These are some of my favorite patriotic numbers. Other favorite patriotic songs which I like are

· Jahan Daal Daal Pe Sone Ki

· Sarfarosh ki Tammana(Sarfarosh)

· Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sadha(Purab Aur Paschim)

· Sandeshe Aati Hain(Border)

· Baar Baar Han(Lagaan)
