Patriotic Songs
There's more to them than just being songs. These are the threads that help instil feelings of belonging and togetherness in the people of a country. Imagine how the word Patriotism would lose it's meaning, not in it's entirety, but in the mind of a common Indian had it not been for them.
Here are my personal favorites-
Our very own National Anthem-
Jana gana mana adhinayak jaya he,
bharat bhagya vidhata.
How can any song but this lead such a listing. One billion people stand up in pure passion when its played despite the fact that half the Indians don't know the meaning of the wordings. What they understand is that this is the song that identifies them with this great nation. I personally didn't like writing the song's lyrics in English. Not that its anything against the language but it seems so much more apna sa(familiar) in Hindi.

Another obvious choice-
* *Vande mataram
sujalam sufalam
malayaja sheetalam
shasya shyamalam mataram
vande mataram.
Written in sanskrit by famous Bengali poet Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, this is another song that every Indian recognises. Rejuvenated by A.R. Rehman a few years back.

* *Aye watan aye watan, hamko teri kasam
teri raahon mein jaan tak bicha jayenge
It means -'O my country, we swear by you we shall lay our lives in your path'. I first heard this song when I was very young(6-8yrs I guess) and may be too young to understand the true meaning of patriotism but the song immidiately struck a chord with me and I liked it very much.

* *Aye mere watan ke logon
zara aankh mein bhar lo paani
jo shaheed hue hain unki
zara yaad karo kurbaani
When Jawahar Lal Nehru heard this song, sung so passionately by Lata Mangeshkar, tears dropped from his eyes.

* *Kar chale ham fida jaano tan saathiyon
ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyon
Absolutely mesmeric lyrics by Kaifi Azmi. This song from the movie Haqeeqat can lift the dead from their graves and make them salute our brave soldiers.
-
*Aye mere pyare watan.
From the film Kaabuliwala and sung by Manna Dey this song captured the imagination of the Indian for quite some time.
-
*Mera rang de basanti chola, maaye rang de
The new version by A.R. Rahman in the Legend Of Bagat Singh is so good. Lyrics that inspire much more than just awe.
-
* *Mere desh ki dharti sona uglale ugale heere moti
mere desh ki dharti.
A great song and a big commercial hit too.
-
* *Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiya karti hai basera
woh Bharat desh hai mera
woh Bharat desh hai mera
Another personal favorite. The song emphasises the cultural diversity and unity of India. It means'Where on every branch resides a golden bird, that is my country Bharat'.

* *Bharat humko jaan se pyara hai
sabse pyara gulistan hamara hai
A song with an inspiring video from the flick Roza.
