The men who really mattered…. The men, who brought in the difference to Hindi Film music…. The following is my small tribute to these great men.

I have tried to give the list in the form of a count down. The order is my opinion of who has been the greatest… not who have been my favorites. The parameters I have looked at are, Popularity, Versatility and Voice.

10. Mahendra Kapoor

Find of a talent hunt in the 1950s, Mahendra Kapoor rose to name and fame with his Rafi like voice and his ability to sing at higher end of the octave. However, it also became his doom as he was stereotyped as a singer who can sing in high pitch alone. He was largely associated with Sunil Dutt and Manoj Kumar in their movies.

My Favourite Song: Chalo Ikbaar Phir Se(Gumraah)

My Ratings: Popularity: 5/10+ Versatility: 5/10+ Voice: 6/10= Total: 16

Ranking in my personal favorites: 8

9. Kumar Sanu

Starting as a Kishore Kumar clone, he rose to heights of popularity in the early 1990s, when Gulshan Kumar ruled the music industry. However, his fall was also equally sharp. Often criticized for not having a range or a good voice, he seemed to be a man after singing records…. Quantity achieved, but quality compromised.

My Favourite: Kuchh Naa Kaho(1942….)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 7+ Versatility: 4+ Voice:5= 16

Ranking in my personal favorites: No Rank

8. Manna Dey

Probably one of the most unfortunate singers in the industry. He had everything that it took to be a great singer… a great voice, a good range, command over classical music…. But he could never dictate terms. Probably his ability to sing complex classical songs with ease became the cause of being used only for selected songs.

My Favourite: Ye raat bhigi bhigi(Chori Chori)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 5+ Versatility: 7+ Voice:7= 19

Ranking in my personal favorites: 5

7. Udit Narayan

The man who is ruling the industry today… His soft, silken voice as done wonders and has surpassed many challenges on the way…. First it was the challenge of filling the vacuum created after the death of Kishore Kumar and then the challenge of Kumar Sanu. But finally perseverance of this singer paid off. His range is limited, but his voice has compensated for that.

My Favourite: Jadoo Teri Nazar(Darr)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 7+ Versatility: 5+ Voice:7= 19

Ranking in my personal favorites: 9

6. Talat Mehmood

The debonair star of the fifties could have been a much greater singer had he preferred to be a singer alone, rather than an actor-singer. His voice had magic that made him the king of gazals. He was definitely a prime choice for soulful or sad songs.

My Favourite: Shaam-e-Gham ki Qasam(Foot Path)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 6+ Versatility: 5+ Voice:9= 20

Ranking in my personal favorites: 1

5. Hemant Kumar

The singer, music director, who had redined conventional singing. Like Talat Mehmood he is also another singer limited by range, but he was definitely as versatile as one could get. Though he sang a limited number of songs, but still his popularity remains intact even today.

My Favourite: Yeh raat yeh chaandni(Jaal)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 6+ Versatility: 6+ Voice: 8= 20

Ranking in my personal favorites: 5

4. KL Saigal

The first king of Hindi music…. KL Saigal has been a legend even after 6 decades of the end of his career. Probably that’s because of the magic that he had in his voice. Not much of range or versatility, he compensated for everything through his voice.

My Favourite: Gham diye mushtaqil(Saha Jahan)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 10+ Versatility: 6+ Voice:9= 23

Ranking in my personal favorites: 4

3. Mukesh

Called as the king of sad songs, Mukesh had always it tough fighting out against shadows. First it was the shadow of KL Saigal due to similarity of the voices, then it was the fight to come out of shadows of Rafi and Kishore. But still, he survived for 3 decades and his popularity remains intact even today.

My Favourite: Zindaa Hoon Ish Tarrah(Aag)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 8+ Versatility: 6+ Voice:9= 23

Ranking in my personal favorites: 3

2. Kishore Kumar

I know, I have created a furor with KK being at No. 2 .

Kishore Kumar, though present in the industry from 1950s, got into height of popularity after Aradhana(1967) and went on to dominate for next two decades. So much was his onslaught that even past greats like Mohd. Rafi found it hard to compete. No wonder that his rise also marked the fall of the past legends. Often associated with Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, he had the opportunity to work with almost all lead actors and Music Directors of his time.

My Favourite: Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke(Nau Do Gyarah)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 10+ Versatility:  8+ Voice: 9= 27

Ranking in my personal favorites: 7

1. Mohd Rafi

The one and only…. The man, whose name is almost synonymous with Hindi Film Music. He dominated the Golden Era of Hindi Cinema… both 1950s and 1960s. He had everything that was needed…. A great voice, a wide range and a great attitude. He worked with all the music directors(not much for Anil Biswas though) and actors of his time.

My Favourite: Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki(Dulari)

My Ratings:: Popularity: 10+ Versatility:  10+ Voice:10= 30

Ranking in my personal favorites: 2

Note:

Many people may wonder how can the rank of “My Favourite” be different from the rank of “The Greatest Singers in My Opinion”… The answer is simple… In the first list, I listen to my heart…. Doors of logic are closed…. In the second list, I listen only to my mind and logical analysis…. Heart and personal biases are not accounted for

In my favourite list of 10 singers, I would replace Kumar Sanu by Pankaj Mallik at No. 10.
