The new generation cinema have given us only a handful of melodies that are worth remembering for a long long time. Unlike the golden age, the lyrics of the new gen songs have lost its sanctity. The digital overkill in the industry and the surge of tamil-telungu dubbed songs that are so pathetic. The sort of'eda''mone''kutta' love songs is a blind imitation of these north indian music that doesn't quite fit into malayalam. Bad music is NOISE. Good music is a soothing to the ears. Here are some of the noteworthy songs of the new-gen malayalam cinema. Remember these are my choice only and its bound to be a subjective opinion. If you have other songs that are better than my list, please be open to share.
- Azhalinte Aazhangalil
Movie: Ayaalum Njaanum Thammil
Music: Ouseppachan
Lyrics: Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma
Singer: Nikhil Mathew
In Jomon T John's cinematography, this song appears to be wonderfully choreographed. Not to mention the lyrics, the singing or even the act by prithvi and samvritha sunil. What I loved so much about it however, is the manner in which it empathizes the pain of the mind of the protagonist in a subtle manner.
- Ethu Kari Raavilum
Movie: Banglore Days
Music: Gopi Sunder
Lyrics: Rafeeq Ahmed
Singer: Haricharan
Among the five tales in Anjaly Menon's Banglore Days, I fell for the one featuring Dulquer Salman and Parvathy as Arjun and Sarah. You can't help but clap and hoot when Arjun tells Sarah that "He would rather walk with her rather than to stalk her around" in the scene featuring the couple in the vaayu vajra Air bus in Banglore. That scene is followed by this lovely melody composed by Gopi Sunder. The new comer is heavily criticized for plagiarizing music but this song, albeit for a short while, silenced the critics.
- Olenjali Kuruvi
Movie: 1983
Music: Gopi Sunder
Lyrics: Hari Narayanan
Singer(s): Vani Jayaram and P Jayachandran
How can you forget Olanjali Kuruvi from 1983. In Vani Jayaram's sweet voice, this song is as exquisite as a Tree pie's voice.
- Nilamalare Nilamalare
Movie: Diamond Necklace
Lyrics: Rafeeq Ahmed
Music: Vidyasagar
Singer: Srinivas
As the song Nilaamalare… is racing up on the charts, Srinivas, alias Nivas, the voice behind it is still bemused. “We already have a great singer named Sreenivas. Many suggested that I should change my name and so I dropped ‘Sri’ from it, ” says the 28-year-old.
Nila malare… is his debut song as a playback singer. His claim to fame till date was the music reality show Airtel Super Singer- Season 3(Vijay TV) in which he was among the top five contestants. “I wanted to be a playback singer and used to go around giving demo CDs to many music directors, including Vidyasagar sir. Luckily, he liked my voice and called me for a recording, ” Srinivas recalls.
- Anuragathin Velayil
Movie: Thattathin Marayathu
Music: Shaan Rahman
Singer & Lyrics: Vineeth Sreenivasan
When she hides her face with the black veil, then I can't see anything else around. Vinod romantically reveals his love interest Ayisha to the police man played by Manoj K Jayan in Vineeth Sreenivassan's Thattathin Marayathu. In one of the remarkable scenes in the film, a supporting character played by Sreenivasan proclaims that " It's the woman's purity that the black veil ought to shroud not her dreams." This is indeed as romantic a song as you might hear in the history of Malayalam cinema.
- Vaathilil Aa Vaathilil
Movie: Usthad Hotel
Music: Gopi Sunder
Lyrics: Rafiq Ahmed
Singer: Haricharan
Feyzee(Dulquer Salman), sipping a Sulaimani along with Ustad(Thilakan), as the cold beach breeze blows across, asks in a subdued tone as to what it is that makes the drink taste so special. Mohabbat, answers the old man.
Another Gopi Sunder, Anjaly Menon, Rafiq Ahmed, Haricharan magic! Usthad Hotel is sheer poetry on screen. So is this song.
- Kanninnullil Nee Kanmani
Movie: Trivandrum Lodge
Lyrics: Rajeev Nayar
Music: M Jayachandran
Singer: Najeem Arshad
The sweet, innocent little song from Trivandrum Lodge.
- Mazhaneer Thullikal
Movie: Beautiful
Singer: Unni Menon
Music: Ratheesh Vega
Lyrics: Anoop Menon
This song has an awesome feel to it. And the lyrics writren by Anoop Menon has a melancholic feel.
- Alolam Thenolum
Movie: Ithu Pathiramanal
Lyrics: Vayalar Sharadchandra Varma
Singer(s): Najim Arshad
Superb song. The less talked about the song, the better it is.
- Kannadi Vaathil
Movie: London Bridge
Music: Rahul Raj
Lyrics: Rafiq Ahmed
Singer: Haricharan
The only fast number in this list is Kannadi Vaathil from London Bridge. Another gem of a song written by Rafiq Ahmed.
