The Colorful Garden

What do we all share in common here at mouthshut? BINGO! We all write. Some of us write a lot, some write little.but we all have a writing'style'. May be after I write a couple of more reviews here, you would probably say, 'alrite, thats a Senorita kind of a review!'

The name'Gulzar' isn't unknown to any of us. A great writer and a poet with a marvelous writing style.'Gulzar' itself sounds very poetic, meaning a'garden'. His work as a lyricist in hindi cinema is indeed a garden of beautiful, colorful flowers and fragrances which we listen to as songs. Every song he writes, he leaves an impression.

Trying to put gulzar's work on a single page of mouthshut would be kind of impossible for anybody. So, i've tried(hard!) to pick up a few and ofcourse my personal favourites on this review.

Speaking of the writing styles of gulzar, he writes in a style such that anyone of us can relate to the songs. Sometimes, I feel the echo of his songs in my heart and see them as a picture of my own life.

He portrays'life' in his songs very beautifully like

-'Thoda hai thode ki zaroorat hai, zindagi phir bhi yahan khoobsoorat hai' from'khatta meetha' sounds so true!

-'tujhse naraz nahi zindagi, hairan hun mein' from'Masoom'.

Sometimes we all are unable to understand what comes to us in life and why. dont we all feel the same?

  • Katra katra milti hai, katra katra jeene do, zindagi hai, behne do'

I think the use of'katra katra' relating it to minutest moments of life, which shud be lived, is wonderful.

  • Aanewaala pal, jaane waala hai. ho sake to ismein zindagi bita do, pal jo ye jaane waala hai' from'Golmaal' is a very positive way of looking at life. catch the lines' ek baar waqt se, lamha gira kahin. wahan daastan mili, lamha kahin nahin.'! well, the moments we live by turn into stories, sometimes unforgettable.

When it comes to emotions of love and separation, gulzar brings out the deepest joy and the deepest pain hidden in the emotion through his songs. Some of his splendid'heartbreak' songs are:

-'tere bina zindagi se shikwa toh nahi, tere bina zindagi bhi lekin zindagi toh nahi' from'aandhi' Well, how else can one say the difference between'living' and'existing', like what is said here, beautifully!

-'Mera kuch samaan, tumhare paas pada hai. sawan ke kuch bheege bheege din rakhe hain' from'Ijaazat'

A song where the girl asks her beloved to return the timeless and splendid love-filled moments they had spent together, on their separation. Gulzar won'National Award' for this one.

-'tum pukar lo, tumhara intezar hai, khaab bun rahi hai raat, bekaraar hai, tumhara intezaar hai' from'khamoshi'.one of the early works of gulzar. I love the way gulzar uses earthy things such as hawa pani raat etc in his songs and relate them to human emotions.'khaab bun rahi hai raat' is one such amazing example.

-'Pani pani re, khare paani re, naino mein bhar ja. neenden khali kar ja' from Maachis follows the suit. A stream of water and tears filled eyes come together, beautiully again.

-'Hazaar raahen, mudke dekhi, kahin se koi sada na aayi. badi wafa se nibhai tumne humari thodi si bewafai'.

This song from movie'thodi si bewafai' got gulzar filmafare award in 1980.

-'tum gaye sab gaya, koi apni hi mitti tale, dab gaya. from Maachis. Great https://lyrics.The melodious voice of Hariharan, adds fuel to fire!

-'E ajnabee, tu bhi kabhi' from'Dil Se' is mesmerizing.

Talking about the'romantic' gulzar, the following songs are absolutely lovable.

  • woh sham kuch ajeeb thi, ye sham bhi ajeeb hai. woh kal bhi pas pas thi, woh aaj bhi kareeb hai. Everytime I listen to this one, it enchants me more and more.

  • tera bina jiya jaaye na. from'ghar' is beautifully written by Gulzar and equally well composed by Pancham.

-'aapki aakhon mein kuch mehke hue se raaz hain. aapse bhi khoobsoorat apke andaaz hain' from'ghar' is a real romantic number.

Then there are songs I coudnt put into a special category but they deserve a mention

  • dil dhoondta hai fir wahi fursat ke raat din(Mausam)

  • samay o dheere chalo( Lekin)

GUlzar and Pancham, worked together to give some excellent songs. Apart from the songs mentioned above, some of their works are:

  • phir wahi raat hai(Ghar)

  • Ye saaye hain, Ye duniya hai(Sitara)

  • ek hi khwab deka hai maine(Kinara)

  • roz roz aakhon tale(Jeeva)

  • naam gum jaayega(Kinara)

  • raah pe rehte hain, yaadon mein basar karte hain(Namkeen)

Oh, that covers 20 songs. Now it would be unfair to call this collection the best 20 of gulzar as i'm sure i'm missing some great ones here. There are already more songs on my mind which I wish to put on this list, but then, it has to end somewhere. May be my pick on the songs written by gulzar differs from your favourite ones, but then it all ends up the same way.i.e. Gulzar rocks!

Cheers,

Senorita
