Fursat ke raat din
May 27, 2009 12:39 PM 18843 Views

Gulzar has always come across as a poet who extensively uses everyday terms in lyrics and yet manages to impart the most profound of meanings to the songs. Expressions like “din khaali khaali bartan hai” and “dil dard ka tukda hai, patthar ki dali si hai” are a case in point.

Like RD Burman using broom & comb as musical instruments in Padosan and glass & spoon in Yaadon ki baarat, one finds Gulzar lyrically playing with such words to churn meaningful https://lyrics. Sample this: Roz akeli jaaye, chand katora liye bhikhaaran raat(Film:Mere Apne, Music: Salil Chowdhury). Another one: Kaanch ke khwaab hain, aankhon mein chubh jayeinge(Film:Ghar, Music: RD Burman). He even paid an ode to "VIP underwear baniyaan" in the song Aa Ee Aa Ee masterji ki aa gayi chithhi(Kitaab)!

More recent ones are Aa dhoop maloon main tere haathon mein(Film:Fiza, Music: Anu Malik), madhdham madhdham teri geeeli hasi(Film:Saathiya, Music: AR Rahman). His hinglish mix is equally enigmatic-aankhein bhi kamaal karti hain, personal se sawal karti hain(Kajrare kajrare), sirf do hi mahine hai seh lo agar, mera future hai teri kasam(Humko maloom haio ishq masoom hai).

I fondly recall an interesting bit in the song beeti na beetai raina(from Parichay) where a phrase goes…chand ki bindi wali, bindi wali ratiyaan. As a kid, I often confused the part bindi wali ratiyaan and thought it was bin diwali ratiyaan, and my confusion would grow since there is supposed to be no chand on a diwali wali ratiyaan!

While this confusion was attributed to my bachpan ki naasamjhi, my misplaced jawaani ka josh experimented with the song Chappa chappa charkha chale(Maachis) and the line chunni leke soti thi kamaal lagti thi became chunni leke soti thi kya maal lagti thi!

Of late, Gulzar has developed a good appetite for danceable songs like “Main aayee hoon UP, Bihar lootne”, “Kajraare kajraare”, “Beedi jalaile” and the like, but his main body of work remains the profound verse packaged in simple words. Here is the list of my favourite 10 Gulzar numbers:

  1. Dil dhoondta hai phir wohi fursat ke raat din(Film:Mausam, Music: Madan Mohan)

  2. Tere bina zindagi se koi shikwa to nahin(Film:Aandhi, Music: RD Burman)

  3. Tujhse naraaz nahin zindagi hairaan hoon main(Film:Masoom, Music: RD Burman)

  4. Mera kuchh saaman(Film:Ijaazat, Music: RD Burman)

  5. Humne dekhi hai un aankhon ki mehekti khushboo(Film:Khamoshi, Music: Hemant Kumar)

  6. Tum gaye, sab gaya(Film:Maachis, Music: Vishal Bhardwaj)

  7. Ek akela is shahar mein(Film:Ghrounda, Music: Jaidev)

  8. Aane wala pal janewala hai(Film:Golmaal, Music: RD Burman)

  9. Khud se baatein karte rehna(Film:Maya Memsaab, Music: Hridaynath Mangeshkar)

  10. Aajkal paaon zamen par nahin padte mere(Film: Ghar, Music: RD Burman)
