Nostalgic Journey

Gulzar has penned down some of the finest lyrics in Hindi movies.

The beautiful poetry that he has written over the years has touched the hearts of many.

I have written this review with a sincere hope that it will give you at least a glimpse of Gulzar’ s soulful poetry.

Let’s begin the nostalgic journey *with songs from the movieGhar. *

I don’t have any idea what’s this movie about, but its music is incredible.

1)‘Aap ki Aankho mein kuch mehke hue se raaz hain…. ‘-

This song is a romantic classic sung by Lataji and Kishor Kumar.

  • ‘Mehke hue se  raaz’ *–  such a beautiful phrase…

And all I say about its second stanza is- Choo chweeet!

Other gems from Ghar are ‘aaj kal Paaon zameen par nahi padte mere’ and ‘phir wahi raat hain’.

2) Hum ne Dekhi hain – Khamoshi

While many poets spend their lives defining love, Gulzar writes –

‘Sirf ehsaas hain yeh ruh se mehsoos karo,

pyar ko pyar hi rehne do koi naam na do’…

He beautifully explains unspoken love-

Hoth kuch kehte nahi, kaapte hothon pe magar,

Kitne khamosh se afsaane ruke rehte hain….

3)Woh shaam kuch ajeeb thi, yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hain- Khamoshi

This is a wonderful song- deep feelings expressed in rather simple words-like-

Woh kal bhi paas paas thi, who aaj bhi kareeb hain…

The album ‘Marasim’combines the talents of two legends- Gulzarand Jagjit Singh.

4)Shaam se aankh mein nami si hain, aaj phir aap ki kami si hain…- Marasim

This is a seemingly simple line but it expresses the feeling of missing someone in truly poetic way.

5)Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne chune…’- Anand

This one is a great song from the classic movie Anand. Look at the word combination * ‘sureele sapne’- *simply amazing.

The philosopher in Gulzar is often reflected in his https://lyrics. Consider this song from Golmaal

6)Aane waala pal jaane wala hain, ho sake to isme zindagi bita do, pal jo yeh jaane wala hain’.

That is such a great thought about life!

Gulzar’s Aandhiis undoubtedly one of the best movies ever made.

All Aandhi songs are classic. This one is probably the most popular-

7)Tere bina zindagi se koi shikva to nahi

I cannot stop marveling at Gulzar’s style of expressing feelings and emotions in simple but perfect and apt words.  And he puts these seemingly simple words together to form a beautiful poetry…

See the way he expresses the feelings of the estranged couple in Aandhi-

‘tere bina zindagi bhi lekin zindagi to nahi…’

‘Kaash aisa ho tere kadmo mein se chun ke manzil chalein,

Aur kahin….door kahin…

Tum gar saath ho, manzilon ki kami to nahi…’

There is one more song in Aandhi that I have to include in my list.

7)Is mod se jaate hain- Aandhi

This is a very beautiful song. This one isn’t completely simple though, so I’ll skip the initial part, which was a bouncer for me.

This romantic song starts with-

Is mod se jaate hain,

Kuch sust kadam raste,

Kuch tez kadam raahein

And read this classic poetry gem-

Yeh soch ke baithi hun, / in reshmi raaho mein,

Ek raah to woh hogi….

Tum tak jo pahunchti hain…

Is mod se jaati hain…

8)Dil dhoondta hain phir wohi fursat ke raat- din- Mausam

This magical poetry creates a nostalgic mood whenever one listens to it. We often get so wrapped up in our daily schedules that we fail to pause and think. We keep driving on a beautiful road with the window curtains on.

This song is about heart’s longing for those lost days-

Barfili sardiyon mein kisi bhi pahaad par,

Waadi mein gunjati hui khamoshiyan sune

Ankhomein bheege bheege se lamhe  liye hue….

Dil dhoondhta hain phir wohi fursat ke raat din…

One more specialty of this song is that it has two versions-different music for each version, lyrics are same, and both the tunes are better than excellent.

10)A ajnabi tu bhi kabhi awaaz de kahin se- Dil se

A great song – full of passion. Gulzar’s words, Rehman’s music, Udit Narayan’s voice- a magical combination.

10 songs, yes, but I have to add at least one more!

11)Musafir hun yaaron- Parichay

This classic is from the movie Parichay. Kishor Kumar renders it in style.

Musafir hun yaaron, na ghar hain na thikana

Muze chalte jaana hain, bass, chalte jaana

Gulzar’s poetry is a rich treasure of finest human emotions, feelings, and insights.

My comprehension of his poetry is confined and my gyan of Hindi and Urdu is limited. So, I won’t attempt to discuss these lyrics in further detail. Besides, Gulzar’s words speak for themselves.

Comments, gyan, additions are welcome:-)
