As any movie has a theme in it, composing the music for the theme also became a trend in Indian film music now. Most of the movies have at least one theme music track in the album which could be used as a background in the movie. And here is an attempt to pick ten best from a very few of such instrumental theme music. The only criterion that I have set is that the instrumental versions of the songs will not find a place in this list. Here are the nominees(Movie names) which were considered for the final list.

Bombay, Taal, Rangeela, Thakshak, Asoka, Lakshya, Devdas, Jungle, Meenaxi, Satya, 1947 earth, Company, Lagaan, RHTDM, Sur, Paap, Pardes, Dil Chahtha hai, Jeans

?Bombay - Theme of War and Peace? by A.R.Rahman from?Bombay?. The music is well orchestrated using violins and flute. The best thing is the tune having Indian classical notes and a traditional flavor and yet it is diluted without any compromise in notes to satisfy both the classes and the masses of the world. Starts with a rhythmic bell sound that sounds in the background for the whole track and the soothing sound of flute by Naveen makes a slow and soft beginning.

Then slowly the violin orchestration takes over the tune to its strings. Just before ending, a sad note in solo violin pours the longing peace into the soul through the ears. These sound waves enter our ears through air, mix with soul, make your heart heavy and the final outcome is drop of tears in the eyes and there the aim of the music is achieved. This is a contribution of the musician to valuable tears of those people who lost their fellow beings in the struggle for peace in this world. As the theme of this instrumental is universal and as it perfectly sounds for the theme through flute and violins this music has reached universal masses.

?Potter?s village? by A.R.Rahman from?Meenaxi? takes us to the streets of Rajasthani villages where the pot making is going on both sides of the street. The track mixes the natural sounds that arise while making pots with sounds of rocking percussions by Hassam Ramzy and strings by John Themis. The strings starts the track playing a typical Rahmanish arabic tune with the natural sounds of pot making and then suddenly the percussions dominates all other sounds and for some 30 seconds you hear all the sounds layered in parallel which has been arranged with very high complexity and ends well with a great chord progression. It has got a catchy tune played in guitar which is the soul of this track blended with vivid natural sounds. Kudos to sound engineer H.Sridhar for such a great sound quality.

'Asoka Theme? by Sandeep Chowtha is a haunting melody. I haven't watched the visuals of this piece but the track sounds to be for picturisations of deep forest and the beauty of some greeneries. The basic tune is soothing and touching. It is a haunting, melodious and divine piece with flute, mild violins, divine Veena and piano fingerings in the background merging together. The shivering flute sound and the bass flute in the start is chilling.

?Devdas theme? by Monty who scored the entire background score of the movie is a great situational track. It is the edited version of entire background score of the movie, thus delivering the whole emotions of the movie in a track of just 4 minutes. The track takes a diversifying path and you never know what comes next. It is well orchestrated piece with good vocal harmony and violins blended with Indian percussions. The solo vocal part singing traditional Hindustani alaps are soothing and delivers the pathos. The track has a great ending with piano and a mild soothing vocal. It is one of the best compilations of film scores.

?Victory? by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy from?Lakshya? is a winning track which perfectly sounds for what it is composed i.e., war and victory. The main tune of the instrumental is that of?Haan yahi rasta? song. Track starts with trombos/ french horn(I am not sure about the instrument used) playing the tune, which when I visualize I could see soldiers standing in their position to start their war in the war field and then the track suddenly moves to different mood with percussions and gun shot sounds and violins playing serious notes, which I could visualize as war is going on and then violins orchestrate the basic tune again in a reduced tempo and high pitch delivers the victory part of the track.

?Lagaan? Once Upon a Time in India? by A.R.Rahman from?Lagaan? is the theme music used all through the movie. The music starts with sweet humming of Anuradha Sriram and followed by grand orchestration with vocal harmony, violin and percussions. The melodious hum in the start with a sad note sounds the water starvation in the village. The grand orchestration with growing choir perfectly sounds the aggressiveness and spirit of the villagers in winning the match. The scene in which 11 villagers will come and stand in a line one by one before Captain Russell make use of this theme music to the best in the movie. Especially the ending banging stroke of percussion perfectly suits Captain Russell emotion on seeing Elizabeth standing last in the line with the villagers.

?Spirit of Rangeela? by A.R.Rahman from?Rangeela? is an awesome techno piece. The violin orchestrations with a western touch along the percussions of Sivamani and seductive chants of Anupama makes this track a perfect dance number. This is the first song of its kind in Indian film music. The music sounds the fire inside an upcoming dancer. Can anyone forget Urmila?s aggressive dance for this number.

?Akash Love Theme? by Mike Harvey from?Dil Chahtha Hai? is a slow, soft music piece composed and conducted in Symphony style. The track is beautifully written and comes with an excellent orchestration. It sounds Akash?s emotions on seeing the play about love in the movie with a lot of subtlety. The music takes into the minds of Akash as Akash travels into his mind and sees Preeti in his mind as his lover. As the scene actually happens in a theatre in Australia, Farhan has gone to an Australian composer Mike Hrvey who has composed many theatre dramas to compose this track.

?Love theme? by A.R.Rahman from?Jeans? is another romantic melody. It is a nice fusion of western and classical music. The track is a blend of anupama?s unique voice singing in English with American ascent and?Ni sa re sa? chant by Febi. The piano is at its best in the background. The music just flows with ease and you feel like floating in the air. The director has used it well in the background when the whole USA at night under beautiful lights is shot from the top angle through a helicopter. The music along with the visual virtually takes us to America. Though the music is slightly inspired from?Chariots of Fire? it is a good one.

?Raga Dance? by A.R.Rahman from?Taal? is an exceptional in the list. I don?t know what for this music is scored. It is just another dimension of ARR?s skills in orchestration and fusion. The music sounds like it is for a serious situation. But in the movie, it is an intro piece of Anil Kapoor?s character. Otherwise it is a grand track with tubular bell sounds running around a grand orchestration with rhythmic beats.
