Ten feel-good movie experiences!
Sep 09, 2007 03:58 PM 12219 Views

What is a romantic movie? From my limited understanding I may say that such a movie fires our collective imaginations. We begin to empathize with the plight of the lovers, usually young. We find parallels in our own life and leave the theatre with the feeling that our mundane life has somehow been the subject of a blockbuster fully knowing that this is not true. Its difficult, if not impossible to make a good romantic movie given the commercial considerations at play.Indeed a romantic film is made completely from the heart.

Since filmaking is agroup effort it is difficult to co-ordinate all facets into a single film that is young, fresh and full of the ideas that are essentially latent in the generations to come. But some films, more or less achieve this feat.I mention ten of them here.

  1. Silsila: The execution was excellent here.So much so that the visuals stll evoke feelings of rebellious, sophisticated though extra-marital love.

2.Ek Duje Ke Liye:The emotions of the young, their natural propensity to rebel are beautifully showcased here.

3.Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak:A very effective, though naive saga of love in the times of parental opposition, embellished with hummable music.

4.Josh:Great locations, beautiful actors and awesome chemistry between Aishwarya and Chandrachur. Each scene composed like a rare gem.

5.Bobby:The first of this genre really.Still relevant for its overall effect and Dimple Kapadia.

6.Geet Gata Chal:It was a Rajshri film based on a famous Tagore story.Depicted the rural, cultural india.

7.Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge:A love story spanning two continents, many cultures. It tugged at the heartstrings of people of my generation.

8.Kuch Kuch Hota Hai:It was Karan Johar's indianised version of the Arxhie's story. And it worked like wildfire.

9.Hum Kisise Kam Nahin:In the seventies people were crazy about this movie. It told the story of young love and had great songs by RD Burman.

10.Aradhana:One of the first films with an unusual, bold theme. The chemistry between Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore was seen to be believed.
