We have our own reason to eulogize or deprecate any product or services. At times, reasons cannot be established by logic and you end up in liking or disliking it. I have been subject to mauling of the farthest degree for not liking many product / service / movie / actors who / that are having mass appeal. At times, even I start coming up with arguments guided by subjective thoughts. Without getting into the genetic analysis of the process of likes and dislikes, let me scribble a bit on some movies (read as Non – Indian) I ended up loving. I have tried my level best to cover movies belonging to all genres.

I Drama

This is my favourite group mainly because it brings me close to the reading pleasure. Normally, I think of watching a movie only when I have nothing to read. In short, drama with thick plot and seasoned actors always attracted my interest.

  1. Mystic River This is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, directed by Clint Eastwood, with an amazing star cast – Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon. As an actor and director, I always loved Clint Eastwood. Right from his acclaimed Spaghetti Western movies to story based Million Dollar Baby etc.

Mystic River is a total package – it is drama, suspense thriller, murder mystery; and from starting to end, the movie will keep the viewer on their toe. The story of three adolescent boys who were good acquaintances broke off after a mishap and later united due to another tragedy. Their relation was always complex and chaotic and the story progress to the deep layers of mystery. The movie won six academy awards (including Best Actor (Sean Penn), Best Movie, Best Director)

  1. To Kill a Mocking Bird Court room drama always attracted my interest. Especially those movies dealing with the social context where in the relevance of jurisprudence are highlighted in the celluloid. This is based on Harper Lee’s novel and I remember this movie for the finest ever delivered performance of legendary actor Gregory Peck. It is not the flamboyancy of the lawyer that counts but his conviction and dearness to justice. The white man who takes up the case of a black man who was accused of raping a white woman is the central theme of the movie. Apart from being the one which addresses serious social issue, the story concentrate on the subtle chemistry of the kids and single father in a poignant but endearing manner. The court room speech of Gregory Peck is one of the best of this sort which is ever shot for a movie. (Not forgetting the hysterical outcry of Al Pacino in the climax of "And Justice for all")

II Western

As a kid, I used to love Western Movies. The hero with cow boy hat riding on horses, barren waste land, treasure hunt ---- the theme of this genre remains similar but again some of them are always worth watching.

  1. The Good, the bad and the ugly The father of Spaghetti Western, mind blowing theme score by Ennio Moriccone, originally produced in Italian is considered to be the best or most popular western movie which is ever produced. A hero without name (often called as Blondie) and two others hunting for the fortune buried in a graveyard. Their symbiotic relationship, betrayal, greed, exploring the rough terrain ---- it is a visual treat!

  2. Indiana Jones – Last Crusade Out of the four, this one might be the best. Especially, the father – son chemistry of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery (who is only 13 years elder to Ford in real life) is widely appreciated. It is not a 100 pc western movie, but a fictional adventure movie. The profession of Professor of Archeology was never so glamorized in the screen. Again, it is all about treasure hunt (This part is all about the truth of Holy Grail). Also, fun packed one liners like “We are pilgrims of an unholy land” (by Sean Connery when they visit Hitler’s Germany). This movie draws heavily from Mackenna’s Gold and again inspired the central theme of Da Vinci Code

III Romantic Comedy

I am not much into this but some of the movies watched in some particular mood touched my right chord.

  1. The Holiday This could be one movie which made me laugh a lot and that too by the female protagonists – Camrone Diaz and Kate Winslet! Leaving all the power packed performance of Kate Winslet, I simply loved the naïve and submissive British Lady’s character who is not able to say “no” to her boyfriend who just want to have “time pass” with her and that too for three years. Cameron Diaz on the other side is a career oriented and stubborn lady from LA. Both of them after break up with their respective partners get into a “House Exchange” arrangement for two weeks. So, we have the American Lady in Surrey, UK and British Lady in US. The difference in US / UK culture, the characters they got acquainted during this holiday etc. are being woven into an endearing romantic comedy. Ninety year plus gentleman man, Eli Wallach (Mr. Ugly in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) is the surprise element of this movie!

  2. Sex and the City “Female bonding” – It is fun to eves drop into their world also at times. I never watched the HBO soap opera but happened to watch the movie. Four 40 plus ladies who share warm camaraderie in New York and their miseries / agonies / escapades! Of course, male bashing is the highlight of the movie but still; it is fun to watch for some hearty laugh where you don’t have to apply your thought

PS Going by my taste, I still wonder how come I end up in liking these two movies!

IV Comedy

I always prefer mindless or slapstick comedy. Also, spoof on some serious issues also work well with me (Something like My Cousin Vinny, which could be the best spoof on American Legal System). To pick a couple of movies is a task but still –

  1. Air Plane This is a satire but I always regard this movie as the one which made me laugh for hours! An ex pilot who got cold feet -
