Wow!What a subject to write a review on this auspicious day!Today is Chhoti Diwali or Narakchaudas or better known as the day when no matter what you have to take a bath! and clean every nook and corner of your house or else you will remain dirty all year! Wow!What a tradition our elders made!anyway…Ten best devotional songs…I think whatever devotional songs I have heard till now, movie-based or non movie-based, all are good …but as usual I will write what I Like most-

1.Sundarkand…by Mukesh…is my all time favorite, I have been hearing this from my childhood and never get tired or bored by it, Sung excellently by Mukesh and some other singers, it describes how Hanumanji gets into Lanka after much struggle, killing many demons and gets to know about Sitaji and how he meets Vibhishan, good brother of Ravana who leaves ultimately to meet ShriRam.I have no words to describe how good this collection is…not only it calms my mind, but inspires to fight against evil and keep faith in Almighty. It is sung in original dialect and you may need some help in understanding words and their meanings.Mother is said to be first teacher of child and my mother initiated me into this, my grandmother won’t give food to my mom if they don’t read this every day before their meals. If I keep on writing this, next nine songs will feel deprived!

2.The next best devotional song though short in comparison to Sunderkand…is from LAGAAN…O paalanhare nirgun aur nyare, tumhre bin hamra kono nahi…sung beautifully by Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan is an excellent devotional song.Javed Akhtar has penned the lyrics greatly.

3.Yashomati maiya se bole nandlala, radha kyun gori, main kyun kala…from SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDRAM.Sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey.I didn’t know earlier that Krishna was dark colored! This song helped me in knowing this.

4.I like all the aartis…Aarti kijo hanuman lala ki, om jai jagdish hare, aarti shri kunj behari ki, om jai gange mata…there are *many more aartis and sung by virtually all the singers and all are good. When people have no option in life but to call God for help, that is called *aart awastha(situation) and thatswhy aarti is called aarti…after which better sense prevails.

5.I also like Anup Jalota’sbhajans…he has a unique style of rendering  bhajans, in between bhajans, he explains the entire bhajan…One of his most popular bhajan is …aisi lagi lagan, meera ho gayi magan…

6.One of the devotional song of movie PARINAY…Jaise Suraj ki garmi se tapte hue tan ko mil jaye taruvar ki chhaya, aisa hi sukh mere man ko mila hai  jab se main teri sharan mein aaya…this song also sung by Jalota is a masterpiece.

7.There are many devotional songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, all are obviously good, but one I like very much is …Thumak chalat ramchandra bajat paijaniya…referring to childhood of ShriRam when he used to play wearing paijaniya(anklet) and anklet’s sound would amuse everyone around him.

8.List cannot be complete without Gayatri mantra…this also like aartis, is sung by virtually every artiste and singer.Listening to Gayatri mantra has been scientifically proven to calm nerves and bring down blood pressure to normal levels.

9.Jagjit Singh has also come up with some devotional songs and it suits him as he has a calming and soothing voice, I like one of his song very much …Hey Ram…

10.One of the very good devotional songs, Prabhu tum chandan hum paani…sung by Singh’s wife Chitra is also worth listening.

I also like two more songs from movies-

Aye maalik  tere banden hum, aise hon hamare karam   …from DO AANKHEN BARAH HAATH.

Yeh kaun chitrakaar hai…from BOOND JO BAN GAYE MOTI.

I again wish all of you a very Happy Diwali!
