A few months ago I have been to my aunt?s place, a very religious and pious lady.

Her shelf was full of various cassettes of religious songs. The only exception being a record of Saath?saath and Arth.

The one that caught my attention was a collection of religious songs from Hindi movies and to be precise what caught my attention was a particular song from **Mughal-e-azam, Mohe panghat pe nandlaal Chhed gayo re?.

Oh mi god! what is this, I thought.

It is more of a sensuous songs or any kinda song for that matter but by no mean it could be a religious song. But I know this thing never crossed my aunt?s mind . It invokes as much of devotion in her as any of them . After all it says something about her much revered Nand laal.

Anyways that was just an example I have put to say that its more in our hearts then in words.

As for me I don?t believe in a particular God but I do believe in an almighty power . A power which gets the whole world going. Here are some songs dedicated to God almighty.

*1. O paalan hare, nirgun aur nyaare

tumhare bin hamra, kono nahin

Movie: Lagaan*

Oh! nurturer of mankind, unnamed, unshaped

You are the only one for me oh God

The beautiful song sung by none other then Lata Di is as much devotional as it is inspiring.

Why should one be ashamed of surrendering to the creator of mankind? He knows all our weaknesses and strebgth

bhakti ko shakti do, hare nahin nirbal dukh se

We don?t ask you to eliminate sadness,

we rather ask you to bless us with the power to fight it

*2. Aana hai to aa raah mein kuch der nahin hai

bhagvan ke ghar dere hai andher nahin hai

Movie: Naya daur*

Lord pay heed to everyone?s prayer

come his way, his way is straight

A wonderful song sung wonderfully by Mohd. Rafi and wonderful lyrucs byShakeel Badauni.

Jab tujh se na suljhe tere uljhe hue dhande, bhagvan ke insaaf pe sab chhod de bande

When things are going out of your hand,

leave everything in lord?s hand

*3. Saancha naam tera, tu shyam mera

sagra jagat hai jhootha saathi, toote Deepak bujh jayen baati

Movie: Julie*

You are the only divine truth, the whole world is a lie

You are in the evening and in the morning,

You are in all shades of life

A very nice song and not to mention the beautiful melody as well.

4. Rasool allah

I have heard this song In Lata mangeshkar?s Shraddhanjali., a duet with brother hridayanath Mangeshkar. I don?t know whether its in some movie or not but it?s a beautiful classical devotional song . The song Involves the famous sufi saint Hajrat Nijamuddin Auliyaa.

*5. Mere maula karam ho karam

Movie: Khaaki*

A very nice song in recently Released Khaaki. Its melodious, the lyrics are simple yet moving. What more do you expect from a devotional song?

*6. Piya haajee ali

Movie: Fiza*

ARR?s magic can?t be overlooked anywhere. A melodious Qawwali sung byShaukat Ali. It praises the glory of Saint Haji ali(mumbaikars know better).

Aap par sari khudaai naaj karti hai,

bigdi kismet aapke dar pe sanvarti hai

jiske dil mein jo chipa hai sab tumhe maloom hai

*7. Shirdi vale sai baba

aya hai tere dar pe savaali

Movie: Amar Akbar Anthony*

Another Qawwali singing to the greatness of the famous saint Sai Baba.

A man like god or a god like man who knew no religion other then humanity.

*8. Prabhu tero naam, jo dhyaaye, fal paye

such laye tero naam

Movie: Hum Dono*

The magician of words Sahir Ludhiyanvi couldn?t be thanked enough for this bhajan.

Lata di?s voice adds all the more magic to it

Oh almighty, your name alone take away all the pains

Your name bring all the happinesses, we praise thy name lord

*9. Tora man darpan kehlaye,

bhale bure sare karmo ko, dekhe aur dikhaye

Movie: kaajal *

The queen of sensuous songs Asha Bhonsle will amaze you with this price less song of hers.

The lyrics contains an absolute truth within themselves.

Man hi devta man hi ishwar, man se bada na koye

Man ujiyara jab hoye to, jag ujiyara hoye

The song says God resides in our hearts,

enlighten your heart, your soul

and the whole world will be enlightened

*10. Sukh ke sab saathi, dukh mein na koi

tera naam ek saancha, duja na koi

Movie: Gopi(1970)*

Oh lord! Thy name is the sole truth in this world

Rest is a lie, You are with us in all times

Kalyan Ji?Anad ji?s wonderful music direction have left no stone unturned in making this song memorable. It best describes the way run after looking for things which actually lies within ourselves.

Bahar kit u maati faanke, man ke bheetar kyun na jhaanke

?When you pray you rise to meet in the air those who are praying at that very hour, and whom save in your prayer you may never meet?

By Kahlil Gibran

God bless all
