From the point of view of Bollywood, 2006 was an amazing year! Each month a biggie arrived and lots of amazing movies. Most of the well-known filmmakers like Sanjay Gupta, Pooja Bhatt, Kalpana Lajmi, Ramesh Sippy, Harry Baweja, Priyadarshan, Satish Kaushik, Subash Ghai, Raj Kanwar, Inder Kumar, Ram Gopal Verma, Mahesh Bhatt, Abbas Mustan, Vikram Bhatt, Yash Chopra, Rakesh Roshan, Madhur Bhandarkar, Vishal Bharadwaj, Karan Johar, Dharmesh Darshan, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Nagesh Kukunoor, Farhan Akhtar, Sajid Nadiadwala, J P Dutta, Sooraj Barjatya, Ravi Chopra etc released their movies this year.

And like every year, this year too, was unpredictable. Movies which were expected to do a great business like Family-Ties of Blood, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Pyare Mohan, Darna Zaroori Hai, Ankahee, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Aap Ki Khatir, Naksha, Jaan-E-Mann, Umrao Jaan, Baabul etc doomed at the box-office. And movies, which were released to do an okay business like Aksar, Malamaal Weekly, Being Cyrus, Corporate, Pyaar Ke Side/Effects, Dor, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Woh Lamhe, Apna Sapna Money Money etc did quite a good business at the BO.

Preparing a list of ten best Bollywood movies of 2006 was quite tough, considering the fact that 2006 gave so many entertaining and beautiful movies. You may not believe that I was preparing this list since 5 months! So after thinking carefully, I have come up with my list of ten best movies. Please don’t be angry on me if your favourite movie is not in the list. (Movies arranged in order of their release dates):

1. Rang De Basanti

Cast: Aamir Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Alice Patten, Kunal Kapoor, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi

Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Release Date: January 26, 2006

Rang De Basanti gave an important social message in a genuine and unique manner. Everything in the movie including performances, music, direction, story, screenplay, cinematography etc was perfect. I have already watched this movie 3-4 times and can watch it again and again anytime. Rang De Basanti is also India’s official entry to the Oscars. It deserves it and it also deserves to win the Oscars!

2. Taxi No. 9211

Cast: John Abraham, Nana Patekar, Sameera Reddy, Sonali Kulkarni

Director: Milan Luthria

Release Date: February 24, 2006

Taxi No 9211 stylishly depicts the life in Mumbai. It is creatively directed by Milan Luthria. John Abraham gives the best performance of his career. Nana Patekar also does a very good job. Vishal-Shekhar gives one of the finest music. Songs were equally good, especially ‘Bambai Nagariya’ and ‘Aazmale’. A must watch!

3. Gangster-A Love Story

Cast: Shiney Ahuja, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut

Director: Anurag Basu

Release Date: April 28, 2006

Gangster is about the life of a dreaded gangster. Gangster would have become an ordinary fare if it had felled in wrong hands. But talented director Anurag Basu handled it quite well and made the movie thrilling, captivating, and unpredictable with his terrific direction and screenplay. Pritam’s music and songs are outstanding. Shiney and Kangana give wonderful performance. Emraan does the best job of his career.

4. Fanaa

Cast: Aamir Khan, Kajol

Director: Kunal Kohli

Release Date: May 26, 2006

Fanaa emerges as a clear winner. The movie starts as a sweet love story with little comedy. But in the second half, the movie changes completely and it gets switched over to the topic of terrorism. Even the climax was really effective. Performance, music, cinematography, action-everything was quite impressive.

5. Krrish

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Naseeruddin Shah

Director: Rakesh Roshan

Release Date: June 23, 2006

Krrish, the first Indian superhero, was fantastic. It had lots of expectations from everybody and it meets all the expectations. The movie was fully unpredictable and highly engrossing. The love story in the first half didn’t bore even for a second. The climax was thrilling and superb. Hrithik and Naseeruddin Shah should get standing ovation for their amazing performace.

6. Lage Raho Munnabhai

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, Dilip Prabhawalkar

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Release Date: September 1, 2006

Since independence, there are many great people who are trying to spread the principle of Gandhiji. However, they didn’t achieve much success. But one person got success-Munnabhai! And he gives the principle of Gandhiji a new name-Gandhigiri! Lage Raho Munnabhai won many hearts throughout the country and it taught the viewers the importance and greatness of Mahatma Gandhi. The movie really had a tremendous impact on the minds of the people. Because of Lage Raho Munnabhai, the sales of Gandhiji’s autobiography and biography went up. People even started using ‘Gandhigiri’ in their day-to-day lives. And the credit goes to Rajkumar Hirani who came up with a fantastic story. Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi and Dilip Prabhawalkar give amazing performances. Lage Raho Munnabhai also became the biggest hit of 2005 and one of the biggest hit of Bollywood. It collected 5.16 crores in Mumbai in 1 st week! Even after the release of two biggies, Don and Jaan-E-Mann, it was able to fetch 42 lakhs and that too in the 8 th week! No movie had collected so much in the 8 th week! Excellent!

7. Woh Lamhe...

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Shiney Ahuja

Director: Mohit Suri

Release Date: September 29, 2006

Woh Lamhe makes a great impact on your minds. It keeps circling in your memory even after you come out of the theatre. You think about it and you keep thinking about it for days. Mohit Suri nicely handles the movie. Kangana gives an outstanding performance. Shiney was also very nice. Songs were amazing. The songs, which really stand out, are ‘Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai’, ‘Chal Chale’, ‘Bin Tere’, and ‘Tu Jo Nahin Hai’.

8. Don

Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Ishaa Koppikar, Boman Irani

Director: Farhan Akhtar

Release Date: October 20, 2006

Just one word is enough to describe this movie-Amazing! The movie is stylishly made and has a new age glossy look. Shahrukh Khan gives one of the finest performances of his career. The title track, ‘Ye Mera Dil’, ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ and ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ rocks! And most importantly, it was the unpredictable ending, which made the movie special.
