I am too late in the day to write a review on this topic .But better late than never .So here goes my list in particular order!

What do you expect out of a movie which ended with the dialogue ''Tu apne khoyi hui taakat pe rote reh, aur mujhe maarne ke sapne dekhte reh!'' Yes, the movie with the shortest title in the history of Bollywood, unbashedly glorified crime. Randeep Hooda was the man to watch out for . With his brooding intensity, he delivered a hard-hitting performance. Chunky Pandey, as a fellow gangsta, made a good comeback.

Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena

The movie was a fine thriller, and had wonderfully surprising twists and turns. Thankfully, there were just a couple of not-so-bad songs in the movie, and the background score was perfect for the setting. Of all the actors, Kay Kay was best in the movie, and Fardeen Khan came a close second. For the guys - Koena Mitra had a great sexy body, but could't act.

Iqbal

It could be your own story. Your life, your dreams, your efforts, your frustrations and your own people -The touch of reality with captivating performance made it a memorable affair. But it did follow the jaded path in the second half and the impact was diluted by a large degree!

Apaharan

Prakash Jha did it again. After deftly handling the Bhagalpur blinding incident in Gangaajal, this time he took a look at Bihar's kidnapping industry - and came out a winner. Ajay Devgan was simply superb during his brilliant transformation from a frustrated and hapless youth to a kidnapping lord. Nana Patekar whose character was heavily based on the the real-life MP Shahbuddin, did a competent job.

Salaam Namaste

Salaam Namaste took a good hard look at live-in relationships and for the first-time the lead characters in a Bollywood film were shown talking about pre-marital sex so openly. It had a very urbane, hip, Hollywood-ish look and thankfully there were no ,''Main tumhare bachche ki maa banne waali hoon''kinda dialogues. The movie had many cute moments, but it drags in the second half. '

Parineeta

Call me mushy, but then Bengalis just have a way with emotions. Parineeta was a breath of fresh air in a generally cliched Bollywood. A dream debut for any actress, Vidya Balan played the protagonist of the Saratchandra Chattopadhyaya novel to great depth. And her quintessential Indian looks were captured finely, thanks to the great imagery in the film.

My Brother Nikil

MBN was a sweet and sensitive film that never descends into schmaltz. Instead of spending too much time on how Nikil was treated by society at large, it focused on how his disease affected those closest to Nikhil. Onir has been quoted as saying he did not want to associate AIDs with homosexualty and though MBN was one of the first Hindi films to depict a gay relationship as one that's more about love than about sex .

It shocked in parts / entertained in others. There was no buttering, no flowery double meanings, just the truth, and boy, was it straight, genuine and blunt! Whether the issues of homosexuality, fake socialites, pedophiles, drugs, -everything was dealt with, honestly and realistically. The bollywood song and dance love story was all forgotten (thankfully!) and this was one of the few Hindi movies that actually made a whole lot of sense. All the actors, especially the lead actors were out of this world with realistic yet mind blowing performances. The behind the scenes persons too -director, producer, writer etc also deserve a big thumbs up as the story was spun so vividly and fiercely. Mumbai was definitely revealed in its true sense.

MY WIFES MURDER'

This movie had everything which you can expect from a typical RGV flick - jarring background score, eerie feel, no songs and nice performances. MWF's succes was in the fact that it gets into the mind of a murderer. Debutante director Jijy Philips made a promising debut.

Matrubhoomi

Films are made for two purposes - a) as escapism from reality and b) to depict the harsh reality. Matrubhoomi fell in the latter category - one of the few instances where Bollywood had deviated from the happy go lucky into a stark and dark subject. Director Manish Jha depicted us the grim, real world in which women are dwindling in numbers and power and exist for one purpose alone - to sexually gratify men. After watching Matrubhoomi, I was perturbed by the problem of the low sex ratio in India because of female foeticide and infanticide.

paheli

I loved the stunning colours in Paheli. Palekar managed all that without any help from the grandiose K.Jo sets, Swiss landscapes or Mauritian beaches. But what made Paheli a good, entertaining film was the complete package - the actors, the script, the romance, and the comedy. Hats off to you Mr. Palekar, for this visually stunning film. So what if it did not make it to the oscar? There is no denying that Paheli is one of the finest cinema ever made!

Black

All the Bride & Prejudices of the world could take a backseat, Bollywood's true crossover flick was finally here. It was a crossover in the truest sense because first, the highest quality of filmaking was maintained in every arena, in every scene and in every detail. Second, the movie came from a son of the soil, not a director who's spent half his or her life abroad. We finally have a film that we can place on a crystal platter and present to those in Hollywood who think Indian films are all about songs, dances and gaudy outfits.
