Story:

Swades is a movie which talks on a number of issues impactfully.Some of these are electricity, water, education, culture, poverty, caste system, unity. Mohan Bhargava[Shahrukh] is a Project Manger working for NASA, in some weather forecasting system branch. Its been a long time for him working there. He decides of visiting her old maid[considered mother figure],Kaveri Amma[Kishori Balal] who lives in some interiors of Uttar Pradesh[Charanpur],India.

Mohan finds his nanny, Kaveriamma, the symbol to him of motherhood and family, in a village called Charanpur with an admirable young woman Gita (Gayatri Joshi) and her younger brother Chikku.Old-age caste system dictates profession and status in this village peopled with variety of life. Mohan begins to interact with the Panchayat, the body of local self-governance, which has at the helm, the dogmatic but the just village chief and others like the outspoken friend of Kaveriamma

Mohan finally realizes that it is his scientific temperament as well as his understanding of societal complexities that can drive the villagers to participate in a movement to better their lives. The film uses the contrast between the highly developed world of NASA, which has been in the forefront of advances in space research, and this world back home in India, which is at the crossroads of development. Mohan’s simple quest becomes the journey that everyone of us goes through in search of that metaphysical and elusive place called home.


Stats:

Direction: When we talk of Govarikar movie, we expect that other characters too are decently developed. They are not just say-and-go types. The camera work is good.The dialogues and lyrics by Javed Akhtar are brilliant. The sets used look good and real.

Acting: Of late, Shahrukh Khan has done good work, and looks like he can shed the SRK mask if he wishes ( or may be if forced by the directors ). Shahrukh looks restraint, barring one or two scenes where we becomes his usual self. Gayatri Joshi performs well. Kishori Balal is brilliant. Dayashankar Panday and Rajesh Vivek add a decent humor element nicely and impactfully.

Positives: The characters are described brilliantly,the characters of Mela Ram , Nivaran Jee deserve a special mention. The performances are good.Music,cinemetography and score works for a big time.

Negatives: Only one, Its Legnth :(

Overall^^... Swades is a movie which can only be liked by a niche and selective set of audiences. The movie is long but entertaining. In a word "EXCELLENT"
