The full title of this work is
Surely you are Joking Mr.Feynman..adventures of a Curious Character. The impish humor behind punning the word
Curious (is it referring to his curiosity, or
is his character odd and quirky?) can be seen peeking round the corner in every page of this wonderfully light hearted, funny, sad and serious book.
It manages to pack all these emotions, and the entire life of one of the best known Nobel laureates of the latter half of 20th century, into two hundred or so pages.
If the name Feynman is new to you, a web search will give you hundreds of articles on him. But to put it in a nutshell, he was a physicist, was involved in the development of the atom bomb, went on to win the Nobel prize for physics in 1965, and was a member of the team that probed the tragedy of space shuttle Challenger.
He was also an acclaimed teacher of Physics, and his lectures on physics should interest any student of the subject. What makes this book special, though, is the self-deprecating humor with which it is narrated. It pays more attention to the funny side of life than to the depth of his understanding of quantum theory.
Revealing the plot or exposing the vignettes in this review would spoil the book for those who go on to read it, and so I will finish here, exhorting one and all to give this book a try.
