NOTE: Update 12/13/07.My previous review below was based on the scented Sun Laundry detergent. In a weird twist of fate I have now developed allergies to fragrances and dyes. Due to this developement I purchased some of the Ultra Sun Free and Clear laundry detergent. For some odd reason, this version works much better than it's scented counterparts. The only thing I can surmise is due to it's lack of fragrance to potentially cover up odors, it has stronger or more effective cleaners in it to remove them instead. I only paid$2.69(before tax) for a 40 load jug. I must say I am pleasantly surprised it has been so effective. I have upgraded my rating due to it's effectiveness for the price. Now there are some other free and clear detergents out there that still work a little better, but if you are on a really tight budget, this will get the work done nicely. It handled most of the stains we had with pretreating. On top of that, it is still a good household cleaner even without the scent which is good cause I can no longer use scented and dye household cleaners either.
(Old Review Below)
The price is really cheap, but doesn't do well on tough laundry. It works fine as a refreshinging laundry detergent. By that I mean, previously washed clothes and such that have been sitting a while and just need a freshening up wash. In that regard it could help stretch your budget.
I will say this much, it works great on dishes(hand washing), walls, floors, countertops etc. without all the heavy chemicals. I like the smell which is clean but not over powereing. One of my biggest problems with other cleaners is the smell. I don't like fruity or strong chemical smells in any of my dish soap or household cleaners. Just drives me nuts. I mix up my own window cleaners(mixed with a little vinegar and water in a spray bottle) and disenfectants(mixed with a little borax and water in a spray bottle) with this.
We have had no adverse reaction to this and I find it is no harsher on my hands than any other dish detergent on the market and it cleans better than the average dish soap or household cleaner that you buy prepackaged. Plus it works out cheaper than buying dish soap or household cleaners themselves, so it is beneficial to a tight budget there as well.
I have used both the powder and the liquid and get the same cleaning results with both so I can use either/or which makes it easier for purchasing. In other words, no extra trips when I run out.
I will not recommend this for laundry, but for a cheap and effective all purpose household cleaner this is tops.
