Pros:
High Frequency Lead Acid Battery Charger
Cons:
High Frequency Lead Acid Battery Charger

The invention relates to High Frequency Lead Acid Battery Charger with user adjustable voltage and current. As this battery charger is working at High Frequency, the size and weight of the transformer unit is considerably reduced as compared to the conventional 50Hz transformer scheme. Also, the conventional charger using 50Hz transformer has peak charging current, which is almost twice the required average charging current and hence reduces the battery life. The new invention having high frequency operation delivers a pure DC current to the battery hence enhancing the battery life. The unit is provided with user friendly interface for selection of charging voltage and current. The unit displays input mains AC voltage, frequency, output voltage and the charging current on the LCD panel.

The battery charger works on flyback type Switched Mode Power Supply operating at 50 KHz. The over voltage, over current protections makes it less vulnerable to voltage fluctuations and high currents. Connecting wrong number of batteries will give the user an indication through display and alarm. In case of a reverse battery connection, the D.C. fuse at the output blows protecting the Charger. The battery charger will automatically go into protection and stop charging if the load current exceeds the normal charging current.

To eliminate the bulky 50Hz transformer from the conventional charger, hence resulting in easier handling of the unit, reducing size and weight of the equipment.

To have complete isolation of battery and output. The battery terminals are completely isolated from the output and hence it is relatively safe.

To reduce the cost of the inverter by eliminating 50Hz transformer. The 50Hz transformers in the conventional inverters are quite heavy and their material cost of the core and windings are high. In the present model there is no 50Hz transformer and hence the cost is reduced.

To efficiently utilize the features of Low Cost SMPS controller for producing PWM for making pure DC current, doing complex operations and complete monitoring of the overall charger functionalities.

Incorporates fewer components and thus resulting in increased reliability.

The conventional chargers have very high peak currents even if their average values are less, resulting in increased battery stress.

To make SMPS based pure DC current battery charger for longer life of the batteries.

Water topping should be relatively lesser in batteries because of pure DC current charging.

The features include

Since pure DC is charging the Battery, the life of the battery is greatly enhanced. Thyristorised chargers have very high peak current compared to the average current. In SMPS chargers the Peak current is equal to the average current and hence the battery stress is much lesser.

Dedicated Analog Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) IC for precise and fast Control.

Constant Current Constant Voltage Charger working at 50 KHz.

Reverse Battery Protection.

User Adjustable Output Voltage.

User Adjustable Output Current.

Over voltage, over current protection.

Under voltage protection.

Micro controller based intelligent monitoring.

Wide input voltage range of 140V to 270V.

LCD Panel for user friendly interface.

Purchase Price (INR): Low Cost
Voltage of the inverter: 140V to 270V
Which equipment do you usually use it on? reducing size and weight
Do you use it quite often? Yes - The electricity in my area is the pits
