I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a Mt. Dew addict. It’s my favorite soft drink (especially since Dr. Pepper recently changed their formula on me - again).

But, unfortunately,
Mt. Dew doesn’t do much for an upset stomach caused by influenza or other similar illnesses. You know the symptoms I’m talking about: Nausea with a little vomiting to make your day that much more interesting. Pepto Bismol is great for coating the stomach to help suppress the symptoms while the body attempts to heal itself but, there’s still the need to hydrate in order to replace the fluids lost by vomiting or burned off by the fever.
So, when I was a kid, Mom would shove Sprite down my throat. She would bring home a 2-liter bottle of the highly carbonated lemon-lime soft drink and pour it into a glass for me. She let it sit until it reached room temperature so that I could actually keep it down, and insisted that I ’’sip it every now and then.’’

Maybe I’m just saying this because of negative association (’’Sprite equals sickness!), but this product really doesn’t taste very good. It’s a lemon-lime flavored drink, of course, but all of the carbonation makes it taste too ’’bubbly’’ for me. There is NO caffeine in it, which also adds to my dislike for it. What’s the point of drinking it if it won’t help me stay awake or dilate my pupils?
Sprite is also not very sweet, which is probably why it works so well on upset stomachs. Most people drink it because they like the fact that it isn’t a ’’dark and heavy’’ soft drink like Coca-Cola or Mt. Dew, but I prefer to stick with the Mt. Dew and other such products because, to me, they taste a lot better.

My cousin, who is the mother of very young children, allows them to drink Sprite because of the lack of caffeine and the small amount of sugar in it: This is as close as they get to ’’real’’ soda most of the time. So, Sprite does have its uses.

Here in the United States, Sprite is advertised with the ’’Obey Your Thirst’’ slogan. The company is telling us to drink Sprite because we want to - not because of their fancy advertising, celebrity spokespeople, or low price. So, I will give Sprite that: The marketing is creative, and seemingly honest. It’s different, and it’s obviously working, because most people in my tiny little hick town drink this as opposed to 7Up. Interesting, considering that they’re pretty much the same thing so far as I’m concerned.

So, drink Sprite if you’re looking for a ’’light,’’ caffeine-free drink with lots of carbonation - it’ll definitely wake your taste buds up! As for me, I’ll stick with ’’Doing the Dew.’’
