God must be a Mother!!

That sounds like the most simple and impressive line I have ever heard!! Though would confess that I was a bit wary of the book when I picked it up. Shobha De has never struck me like the kinds who would talk about something so simple and realistic. I would say that probably I just went by her reputation(read unnecessary) which preceded her always. So when I read this line and divulged further, it brought in a revelation for me.

She is Just Like You, Me and Any Mother who bears and gives birth to a Child!!

The book contains the letters written by Shoba De’ to her children Ranadip, Radhika,Aditya,Avantika,Arundhati and Anandita. In the series of six main captions, she talks about every possible thing under the roof, which is a cause of concern for a mother. Right from the manner a mother tries to reach out to her children, so that they don’t consider her an alien, she carefully etches a mother’s thoughts on realizing that maybe their kids wanted a better mother. She also talks about the guilty pangs of a mother, when she so wanted to be with her child but some commitment kept her away.

Letter after letter she bares the heart of a mother, the way she understands each and every need of her child, no matter how many she has. She talks to them about their anxieties and hers too. If she relates to their feelings she tries to put across hers too by expressing happiness, sorrow, anger and many a times gratitude.

With this book you realise one thing that a Mother is as Human as any, she commits her share of mistakes, has her own negatives and the way she finds her own space among household and kids.

She touches mundane subjects to the core issues related with motherhood. Customs, rituals, care, concern, growing up, being compassionate, helping in household tasks and many other subjects carefully weave a chain of letters.

~ So why did I leave you in tears and go? Because we adults are cowards. We get our priorities wrong. We give undue importance to unimportant things.

~How are mothers supposed to deal with bouts of periodic depression, anger, hostility and rage? Bury it all “in the interest of peace and harmony within the family"?

~ If anything, that was the time when you were looking to your peer group for answers, and a mother’s viewpoint was just that-a mother’s viewpoint. To be tolerated, but not necessarily accepted or even taken seriously.

~Today as I cannot understand your mania for reeboks, just as my mother couldn’t have understood my passion for high heeled pumps.

~With each passing generation, we are losing a little more.

While I read a review somewhere where the critic claimed it as a trash and termed these letters as “sappy”, I beg to differ my opinion here. And to the extent of sounding rude I would say that probably he/she never knew a Mother or Motherhood. These letters are realistic to the core and of course its an emotional book, it is meant to be that way. I haven’t read any other works of Shobha but this is certainly a remarkable feat she has achieved. She has stepped down from her glamorous image to the image of a day to day mother. These letters are a peep into her life and might be the life of any woman who is involved in child rearing. So while it might sound a sentimental and maybe a boring record to few, the book is a must read for sensitive readers , giving due respect to maternity.
