Worst Experience Of My Life

I went to Sparsh for an ACL reconstruction. It was a scheduled surgery where we had requested for the first slot in the operation theater (OT), two weeks ahead, since we were told my doctors that it would be the safest option as the entire room would be fumigated and would be very sterile. In spite of all the precautions taken I contracted an infection in the OT.

A procedure where patients are admitted in the morning and sent home in the evening, saw me spending the next 20 days 04 hours (as per the bill) , strapped to a bed with a tube sticking out of my knee to suck the puss out. Post surgery patients are given a morphine drip to ease the immense pain of the surgery. My morphine pump dint work and I had to wait 18 hours in excruciating pain for the doctor to come and tell me that the pump is not working.

The hospital was still undergoing construction where the wards on the second had construction workers with granite cutters, concrete and cement bags were walking to and fro.

The nursing staff seems to have been recruited only from rural Kerala and Andhra as all them communicate with each other in Telugu or Malayalam. I was lucky enough that at least half the nurses who attended to me spoke Kannada. Some of then couldn't even read what medicine had been written in my file. They have not had any sort of training even in terms of have to attach a canula for the IV. I had been unnecessarily been pricked over 20 times since they had exhausted all my veins in just a week. My veins were swollen up so badly because none of then had even been thought the concept of flushing after the medicine is administered. They are highly under paid as the cleaning staff gets almost double.

Some of the gowns they had given to me to wear were torn or stained and sometimes both. Same story with the bedsheets.

When being taken to the OT, if nurses are not in sight the cleaning staff are called upon to push the stretcher. They diligently drop the mop and broom and without washing their hands took me up to to the OT. On my last visit the OT I saw a moth flying about in the ICU.

Since my life was in their hands, I waited until I got discharged to meet Dr. Sharan Patil (Chairman of Sparsh Hospitals) to tell him how horrible my experience was in the hospital. My parents who were with me day and night for 20 days came along with me. He is a very rude, haughty and egotistical man. When we brought up various issues such as food and construction work in progress, he lost his cool and started screaming, telling us how we should not tell him how to run a hospital and that we should have seen the construction going on inside the hospital and not decided to get admitted here.

The hospital fooled me by its impressive lobby and interior decor. Please do not get mislead to believe the hope, faith or love exists in that hospital. I came out of the hospital worse than I went in. All it did was make my dads bank account lighter.

This experience has changed me forever.
