It’s that time of the year again - the time I almost despise - WINTER!! What’s worse is that I am up here in Delhi.

I had the privilege of studying in the University town of Manipal for 3 years & its this little place I miss the most.

Manipal is located in the Udupi District next door to the District of South Karnataka (Dakshin Kanara), about 8 hrs away from Bangalore by road. To many it is known as the ULTIMATE party place in the world & it is. No, its not just cause booze is cheap & dope is easily available. I had the ULTIMATE 3 year Party of my life here because its located close to some of the most amazing beaches I have ever been to. To many one beach looks just the same as the previous one they had been to. For their information South Kanara has many other things in store - world famous temples, magnificent waterfalls, beautiful hill stations & superb cuisine. Few of the places I visited include:

PS - The list covers places in Udupi & Dakshin Kanara

1. MANGALORE - An important port as well as the commercial & business capital of South Kanara. Though it still has old world charm. I really didn’t do much sightseeing here but I do remember there being excellent Chinese Restaurants. Also, in Manipal booze may be cheap but there was no REAL pub culture - we used to frequent ''The Knight Rider'' here. This place serves only DRAUGHT beer & plays only ROCK so its totally cool. Another place you can visit if you are at Mangalore is Ullal Beach. It is just 5 km from Mangalore & the most serene & calm beach in the state. Only in the evenings it's filled with locals having ''murmura'' & ''chakli'' made in coconut oil. (I hope you know what this stuff is - or M2M & I'll tell you). The beautiful beach then turns to a dump with ice cream wrappers & soiled newspapers all over the place. Ullal also has a Resort called Summer Sands. This place used to be quite affordable while I was there - but I have heard its undergone refurbishment & has accordingly increased tariff. But it’s a nice Resort so it's also a good choice to stay here instead of Mangalore city.

2. UDUPI - Steeped in myth & history this town is the abode of the famous ''Sri Krishna Matt''. The statue of Lord Krishna in this temple has said to have turned around once to bless a devotee. I guess ever since millions & millions of devotees from around the world has visited it. Close by there are 2 beaches -

a. - MALPE - Just 6 km from Udupi, this beach is not very clean because its mainly a fishing village.

b. - KAUP - I think about 10 km from Udupi it has a lighthouse & a ruined fort. What could be more exciting??? I once spent a night on this Beach with a group of friends. Under the stars.

3. MARWANTHE - The BEST beach ever!!! Located on the Highway that connects Mangalore to Mumbai, Marwanthe is a picturesque seaside town. There is a Resort here called Turtle Bay - they have this little rooms standing up stilts right on the Beach. The rooms are tiny & just have a bed & one bedside table. The windows of the rooms are right opposite the bed & look out to the Arabian Sea. They open up to make a writing table. Another thing - people at Marwanthe have somehow witnessed the most beautiful sunsets.

4. SURATHKAL - Okay, this place isn’t THAT great. Known for the Regional Engineering College. We visited for the many dhabas & restaurants. Afterall, where there are students there are excellent food joints.

5. MURDESHWAR - This is far off from Mangalore or Udupi, shouldn’t feature on this list but there is no other place I can put it !! A gigantic statue of Lord Shiva overlooks the town. We visited in a group of 9 this place thinking it would have a Fantastic Beach, Good Food & Cheap Booze (BTW, Cheap Booze is common all over Karnataka). But all it had was Fantastic Beach, Good Food, & Beautiful Temple. Yes - no Booze in this town.

There were other tinky tiny places like Kallianpur, Kundapura, Mulki, Moodabidri (another Temple Town)...

Overall, I don’t say that go out of the way to visit South Kanara, but if you're there ever - I can assure you - U'LL LOVE IT!
