the new phone, I wanted to buy one, which costs 10,000 or less. But I wanted
all the features of high-end phones for that price. I know you are laughing at
me and thinking how crazy I am. But you will feel sorry for that soon.
I have used Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung phones. So I simply rejected
Samsung phone from my preferred list. Ex-Samsung users might know the reason.
Nokia phones with great features didn’t fall in my budget. So at the end my
only choice was Sony Ericsson. I started reading reviews and sorted out k750i,
k550i, w700i, w800i and w810i. At this point I was ready to spend a bit more.
After reading all those reviews and analyzing the features, I decided to buy
k750i hands down, No second thoughts.
I bought my k750i for 9700 from a Sony Ericsson show room. I knew some
people bought it for 9500 but it depends upon the shop. Ok enough, I stop my
stories here and here are the pros and cons. I have not explained each and
every features of the phone; I have just described the important features.
Camera: k750i has 2MP camera with auto focus and macro mode. Macro mode
helps you to get a clear shot of close ups. A slight press in camera button
does the auto focus; you don’t need to move back and forth to get a clear focus
on the object. It has dual flashlights, which you can use as a torch light or
camera flash. Instead of calling them flashlights, I can call them mini-tube
lights :) With the help of flash and night mode setting you can get decent
pictures even in darks. Yes I mean it you can get DECENT pictures..trust me. In
daylight the picture quality is fabulous. You may forget to carry your digital
cam after you bought this phone. Camera lens has cover, you can access the
camera directly either by opening the lens cover or by pressing the camera
button. You can record videos. Video resolution is low, but that is true with
all cell phones. Self timer is another cool feature of the camera.
Music: This is an ipod inside the body of a mobile phone. Hope, that says
all about the music quality. You can fast fwd, bwd the songs using joystick.
Simply press the start/stop button to play or stop music, use volume button to
change the volume. Pressing and holding the volume button can change the song.
These can be done even if the keypad is locked.
Memory: This comes with 40MB internal memory and 64MB free memory card
with adaptor. Memory card slot is there and it can support up to 4GB.
Battery: Battery life is ok but not very good. With average use it lasts
for three days, with a bit heavy use it can last only for two days. Whereas
w550i battery can last for 5 days with average use.
Misc: With java support you can use lot of java games and java
applications in your phone. There is another cool feature; you can set individual
ring tone and picture for a contact. That picture will be displayed when you
make or receive calls from that person. You can store mail id, address,
birthday info and notes along with the phone numbers. This phone supports voice
commands.
This phone comes with USB cable, phone software CD and a hands free set.
You can also use the ’hands free set’ to listen to songs. Software CD has some
useful softwares. With the help of them, you can connect your phone to PC and
can do some useful stuffs like sending SMS from your PC, storing contact
info, use it as a modem with gprs connection, editing pictures, copy/store
things from/to the phone and etc..
Pressing the volume button down when the phone is ringing will mute the
ring tone. You can simply press it when you are out of the main menu to know
the phone status. This will display memory status, and remaining battery level.
The same buttons can be used as zoom in and zoom out keys for camera.
Bluetooth, Bluetooth Remote control, FM radio, GPRS,IR port, Java
support, Email support, Voice recorder, Speaker phone, external speaker to play
mp3 songs, themes, Video Dj, Music Dj, Photo Dj, call recording (yes, you can
record your calls) and Code memo to store secret information are other great
features. There are some more basic features that I have not mentioned
above.
Gasp…Gasp
Cons: Screen size is small, though the design is good; it is not
an eye catching one, External speaker’s sound playback volume is low. Mega bass
is there but it doesn’t work. Headphone’s song playback volume is good but not
great. Keypad keys are hard to press. Battery life is ok but not very good.
Well some of these cons can be rectified as described in the modifications
section.
Bottom line: This phone is worth for the money and has lot of features,
If you are not a college student who needs flashy looking phones to attract
chicks, you can go for it.
Modifications: I have done some modifications to my phone. I have bought
a 1GB memory card for 700rs from eBay. I can store around 250 MP3 songs in my
phone.
I have changed my firmware to R1CA021, as it is known as the best for
k750i. I have changed my main firmware to w800i (kept the original R1CA021 file
system).
Now, My k750i phone runs on w800i firmware and it has w800i’s interface.
Because of this, my phone got Walkman player, flight mode and increased sound
quality & mega bass. This is possible because both k750i and w800i have
same hardware.
I have installed a patch to increase sound volume, my phone rocks now. I
have done another customization to mute the camera shutter sound. This mutes
the shutter sound when the phone is in silent mode.
The above methods are safe, no need to panic. I have done it to my phone. But
use those methods at your own risk. Initially you may find the methods
confusing, but they are not.

There are hell lot of modifications can be done like changing the menu and so

Caution: The above modifications are not for weak hearted and desperate souls

So I have got a high-end phone for 10,400rs (phone+1GB memory card), Haven’t I?
