-------------------------
THE SONY ERICSSON K508i
--------------------------------------

I said in my last review on the Sony Ericsson K700i, that I would be back
with the review on the Sony Ericsson K508i. As I said in my last review, these two mobiles belong to a friend of mine, and I had it for one week each. I own a Nokia myself, but liked this phone very much.

The Sony Ericsson is a very good piece of equipment for a high end user. Name a feature, and it has it. My friend has a lunar-silvered colour phone, but it is also available in black. The black one is really cool. But the silver is more classic, I guess.

The first impression that the phone gave me was its beautiful screen with the 65536 colour display, with 176*220 pixels and a 1.9’’ inch TFT screen. Trust me guys; the phone has an excellent display, and is bound to impress all with the first look. I was very impressed with the 1.8’’ screen of the K700i, but this is just great.

The battery life of the mobile is an impressive 300 hours stand by, and what is even more impressive is the 7 hours of maximum talk time that it provides. This device is also very lightweight with only 80g to carry around. It won’t cause your shirt pocket to be hanging around like you have your entire world in it. The K700i weighed 93 gms and still was an ease.

The phone is equipped with a good VGA camera. The camera has a very good resolution and supports 4x digital zoom. Guys, this camera is actually very good and is comparable to any digital camera available in the market. Also you can have the additional perk of recording videos.

The sound quality of the phone is really very good. My friend had a clipping of the song ’’dhoom machare’’ and I was like ’’wow! Dude, this is a mini hi- fi you have got.’’ Guys, I guess that is to be the case. After all, this is a Sony Ericsson. The files supported by the media player are MP3, MP4, 3GP, MID, AMR and WAV.

Coming to the connectivity section, the phone supports infrared and USB support. But guys I was disappointed to hear that the phone didn’t have blue tooth. Also the coming age is the age of 3G technology. So the latest mobiles should be having that. But unfortunately, this phone doesn’t have 3G technology. But it supports high speed internet at eh expense of GPRS charges, which at the moment are almost equal and more than that of broadband rates.

There is also Java support, and 12 MB internal memory. So you can download all the latest Java games. The screen is very good as I mentioned earlier which makes gaming a pleasure. While the 1.9’’ inch screen is very good compared to the K700i, the latter has 41 MB internal memory. This is a major factor.

The additional feature called Playnow is just fantastic and you got to see it to believe it. It is direct link music download service. It is very useful in downloading all the latest ring tones very fast from the Sony music entertainment list. The list is also updated frequently.

A small roundup of all the features.

1.     system: Triple band GSM.

2.     Size: 102*46*14.5 mm

3.     Weight: 80g.

4.     Talk time: 7 hours.

5.     Stand by time: 300 hours.

6.     Screen: TFT 65536 colour, 128*160 pixels, 1.9’’

7.     Camera: VGA camera, 4x digital zoom.

8.     Video: MPEG4 video player, Streaming audio/ video

9.     Music: MP3 audio player, Music DJ.

10.     Connectivity: Infrared, USB.

11.     Content: Java MIDP 2.0, Java 3D games, PlayNow

12.     Application: PIM sync, Sync ML, File manager.

13.     Memory: 12 MB internal.

14.     Colour: Black, lunar silver.

But saying my personal opinion, I would only go for a phone that supports 3G technology. As Nokia says the technology is future proof. So, you won?t be thinking of buying another one for a couple of years. Also I would only go for a phone with blue tooth, specially if it is costing around 10k rupees.

But guys, overall, this is a very fine instrument, and if you are looking for a good phone around 10k rupees, then please consider the Sony Ericsson K508i.

Also some added features that can be brought at a price include Car cigarette lighter adapter, portable hands free, micro travel charger etc.
