Note: Don’t be misled by the title into believing that I am writing about some bollywood plot ;-). By the end of this you will know why I chose such a title.

Vyaaparam Droha Chintanam:
= business only thinks how to cheat. I brought this ‘showpiece’ ( meaning useless) in Jun 2004 from a dealer who was my friend’s friend. I asked for Samsung CD writer, but he insisted I buy this as this could also play DVD. For a while I made the historical blunder of forgetting he was a businessman. I bought it, only to regret within 6 months. I am thinking why he wud recommend this product if he knew the product was = title of revu!

The product: Sony CRX320E is a CD writer+DVD combo drive. Since I am not recommending this to any Indian I am not giving much tech details. There was no driver CD with this. Its plug n play. No drivers, no updates available. I got a Nero CD with this. ( but what use since the writer stops working after few months). This can read at 52x & write up to 52x speeds. Does play DVD, but I haven’t watched a single movie on this. (when there are 25movies on TV any given time who needs this? )

Friends say: soon after I bought this, I met some friends who had used this product. Of course their tale was also bitter. But they chose to suffer in silence. They didn’t know about MS perhaps, so they had kept mouth shut ;-). I vented my anger over them saying gadey saalley pehley bol nahin sakte the, kya, to which they did a ulte chore kotwal ko daante saying gadey saalley pehley pooch leta humse. and then we drank tea to the fact that we both were gadey ;-) both of my friends had similar experience. They say the device works initially well upto 3-6 months. Trouble starts showing up by way of blank discs getting corrupted when writing into them. Halway thru writing the writer gets stuck, the LED isn’t any more blinking, its green always, but the writing progress is stalled, cant cancel, as even nero doesn’t respond. Finally you resort to restart or CTRL ALT DEL to escape. If you are hoping to write again thinking the blank CD is usable, forget it – the blank CD is also corrupt, give it to the children to play ;-) My friend were optimistic they waited to lose about 10Cds before realizing it was writers fault.

My Turn: since I moved south soon after thoughts of exchanging weren’t practical. Also being optimistic I presumed ‘history wudnt repeat again’ with me ;-) I used it well for the first 4 months. I mostly used it for writing only as I also had a CD-ROM drive. In 4 months I must have used it to write about 30Cds, mostly for friends who wanted copy music, films. Then trouble started exactly the same way as it was with my friends. I waited till I lost 3 blank CDs to realize now this was only a CD-ROM ;-)

Sony customer support: I didn’t give up hope. Using web I found out in detail where sony india service centres were. On the webpage they had a complaint/service request form. I filled it up. I was waiting their call. Instead I get a mail from them. It essentially said ”Sony doesn’t sell CD writers in India, so no service is available

Questions: that gives raise to many questions. Assuming these devices were imported by third party, what does sony have to say abt this? Why is it listed under products sold/serviced on webpage, if this isn’t sold by sony India? What is sony trying to stop these products which are in a way bringing disrepute to their brand name? Do they keep mum just bcos they are able to sell sony product any which way, and not give service? Why cant sony service it, when the same writer if was bought by a japani or Malaysian wud have to be serviced? this sony CRX320E – is made in some oriental country, they say its not officially sold in India, no service for it – which all make it look like it belongs to nowhere, no ownership, no one knows how it ended up in stores in India, no one to look after it, all of which makes it a – a fatherless bastard, motherless orphan. since it has no father(official seller) and no mother(no look after) its an orphan that doesn’t get the love(attention, service) it needs, so with all these resentment it becomes an anto-social element it goes on doing public property damage(corrupting your blank CDs) ;-)

Advice: if you are a fan of sony, think twice about buying this. If you are buying within India, make sure u get a warranty/guaranty card, bill + make the dealer/seller speak out what kind of service is available. Make sure to get the same in print also. If you are looking for a CD writer I suggest you go for Samsung – not that I have experience of their CD writer, but I know of their service. also if you are thinking of using it as DVD player be careful – since it has a region code, it need not play all DVDs that u insert if u have this drive & are in good terms with the dealer from whom u bought it, try to get an exchange ASAP.

Pros:
Brand name but they disown this in india, black color which means nothing!!
Cons:
No support,no service, damages CD,useless, may not even play DVD,paisa waste
