My first Android - Sony Xperia U was working flawlessly until last month when it finally gave away. Reason being - the phone fell in the water and could not sustain the injuries it was subjected to given that it stayed in the water for 2-3 minutes while I was gasping to get hold of the situation. Probably now it occurs to me why Sony came up with the concept of Waterproof phone in the first place. Anyhow jokes apart, what followed is a meagre sequence of visiting service centers to and fro and their inefficiency to get the phone back to shape without pinching my pocket [much].

Thus with a heavy heart I decided to go forward with the purchase of a new phone. My requirements were clearly laid: OS had to be an Android and budget should be within 13K - the less the better. A neat search from Flipkart/Amazon evolved the following contenders:

  1. Samsung S Duos 2

  2. Samsung Galaxy Grand

  3. Sony Xperia L

  4. Sony Xperia M

Reasons for rejecting Samsung were pretty much the same as last time. Display and resolution was crisper in Sony. The overall build quality and ergonomics were again a tad better in Sony as compared to Samsung. The final nail in the coffin was poor battery life for Samsung phones. Hence decided to get myself a Xperia M.

Design:

One of the reasons I did not opt for Samsung phone is because of their inability to stand out in the crowd. Man, somehow I feel all Samsung phones look so much the same. There is not much difference between a Galaxy Grand and a S4 - the outer appearance is more or less identical. Compared to Samsung, Sony Xperia series offer a better build quality and each model has a specific outward appearance which is in a way good given the price we pay. Design and looks is also a primary concern for many.

The Xperia M feels good to hold and the phone is sleek in size. The curvy rear is a segment first and adds to the overall contour of the phone. The phone is available in black, white and purple color. The purple color really stands out and looks up market. I however opted for the black one. There is an integrated multi-color notification light embedded at the bottom of the phone and it adds to the stark appearance of the otherwise monotonous front – looks amazing in the dark.

Performance:

The phone is packed with Andorid Jellybean 4.1 and there is negligible lag when using the phone that too with many apps loaded. Unlike the Xperia U which was showing its age with all the new age apps, the Android 2.3 Gingerbread was not a complete winner. Compared to the resolution the Xperia U had a better display as compared to the Xperia M. However watching 720P movies in this phone is smooth and does the job without much complain. I have not tried watching with 1080P movies but definitely my Samsung Tab 3 struggles with 1080P to some extent. The 5 Megapixel rear camera is good in daylight, however it suffers in night imagery even with the help of the flash. The front camera is basic and does the job of video conferencing without difficulty. I have used applications like Skype for long hours and video calling is simply great. The User Interface is very intuitive to use although it does not pack in much surprises like the Xperia U. The widgets work well and I have not faced any problem using them. The camera button located on the side is studded with chrome and adds to the up market appearance of the phone – a simple no brainer! The volume rockers are easy to use as well. The phone is available in single sim and dual sim variant and is available at a price of 10.5K(approx). Best part of the phone is the battery backup. I have heavy internet usage – my phone is connected to 3G/Wifi 24 hours a day. A full charge generally stays for 1 and a half day which I feel is overly generous given the huge number of applications that I use. Overall a great buy and I would recommend this phone to others as well.
