That said. PSP as a whole is one of the greatest pieces of Hardware Sony has come up with in recent times. The PSP comes alive, the moment u turnit on. The screen resolution & size is best in the market.
Custom Firmware:
Sony wishes to have utmost control over its hardware usage. hence, they lock the true potential behind "So-Called Advanced" Firmware updates. In reality the updated firmwares do noting more than disable the firmware hacks.
To truly experience the PSP, one has to "Flash" a Customized Firmware.(Modified Firmwares). Unfortunately, "Flashing" is risky work & you may end up with a Paperweight!.
That said The format for PSP video is .mp4, and the only codec supported is H.264 which
anyhow is far better than Xvid or DivX. Lots of applications available for encoding like
iPSP(Windows and Mac OS X), PSP Video 9(Windows), and PSP Ware(Mac OS X). Depending on software/encoding you can get an amazing quality under a 500MB file.
The easiest funtion is the Music Player. As PSP shows up as removable drive on WIndows Xp, one has to only transfer the Music Files(MP3 preferred) to the MUSIC folder.
If you plan to play legally bought games & listen to MP3s then go ahead blindly & buy the console,
If you plan to do a lot more than mere UMD gameplay(Easily change themes, Play stored ISO Games, Control Appliances via inbuilt IR!, play ingeniously developed "Homebrew" games/apps, increase/decrease speed, play PS1 Games), then ensure you can get someone to Flash Custom Firmwares(CFW) to your PSP.
Final Verdict: Worth every Penny(with official Firmware) & more(with CFW). Go for it! You will surely not be disappointed.
Regarding the newly introduced SLIM, the only difference is that is is physically slim & slightly lighter in weight. IR is missing.
