I think ''The Sky is Falling'' is better than Sidney Sheldon's other books. For one, it is more contemporary. Many of the situations described could easily have been in today's newspaper.
The lead character is also well developed -- it has a gentler side that tempers out the ''tough woman'' image. The sum total is more human. It also enables a personal rather than institutional involvement,in the main plot.
Newspaper and television reporters do travel far and wide on special assignment. I once worked with a German team from RTL television channel, who stayed in Mumbai for almost eight days investigating the kidney sale racket in the city.
