Much was expected of Shankars Boss. The two stalwarts coming together. Shankar has hits and good movies to his credit. Rajnikant was fresh from his smashing hit Chandramukhi. Hyped as the most expensive
movie of all times , business wise it might be very successful but it does not justify the craze that preceded its release. Rajni is superb but he cannot compensate for the lack of content. The first half meanders around and idealistic NRI who has made his 200 crores and wants to spend all of it in educating the poor meritorious youth so he wishes to set up a university. After much fanfare the project hits roadblocks in the face of corrupt politicians and scheming enemies in the field of commercial education-education mafia. So the good intentions do not bear fruit and all the money is lost and Shivaji turns a pauper. His enemy presents him a coin to ridicule his idealistic efforts.
He starts with this coin and starts off this time with a vengeance. He schemes to take out the black money of big people , launders it out of the country and brings it back to India as white money. This scheme works and he earns loads of money but ruffles a lot of rich feathers. So he is caught and the police sentence him to prison. He reveals at the end that what could not be done with good intentions could be done by vile in this country.
The movie is a reflection of the system and its loopholes, corruption and political interference.Rajinikant is supreme. His action, comedy and other facets of acting lift an ordinary movie to the commercial success that it is. The rest of the cast is adequate. Th song picturizations seem to have taken a lot of money and it is evident. But the content of the movie is not of 2 and a half hours. So the story proceeds in jerks with fillers in between which break the interest generated at regular intervals. AR Rehman is also not at his best. Had the hype not been created this would have been an adequately good movie but its actual state does not match the hype.
