As an avid Tamil movie viewer, I saw Jillinu Oru Kadaal to the see the magic of the current on screen and off screen pair Surya and Jyothika. Nevertheless, I was not cheated. The movie is worth watching
at least once. I will not be surprised if the cinema halls run house full and a very thin attendance in schools and colleges.
The movie begins with Kundavi’s childhood, teenage and marriage. The picturesque Rajamundry and Tirunelveli with its breathtaking fields are shown. Within ten minutes, the movie shifts to Surya and
Jyothika’s marriage and the movie unravels in Mumbai. There is a figment of Manirathnam element in the movie. An ideal family, with a little girl and a husband with an unforgettable past. The little girl Aishwarya’s dialogues reminds one of those children in Mani’s Anjali. Perhaps, he was the trendsetter for monosyllables and children’s outrageous talks.
Surya has emoted well. His anger when he is called a mechanic repeatedly and his walk out from the meeting is all justifiable and realistic. The main plot opens when he leaves to NY. Incidentally, Jyothika stumbles upon his diary. The diary records the most shocking events in a husband’s life, which is hidden from a wife. A good applause to Jyothika and for her expressions. After knowing the truth, she becomes a confused wife not knowing how to handle the past and determine the future. Like a sincere wife, she goes in search of her husband’s former love Bhoomika. Bhoomika is a delight to watch.
Surya and Jyothika’s acting prowess is shown when Bhoomika visits them. Surya mumbles for words and does not know how to introduce Bhoomika. The director has handled this scene very well. Jyothika accidentally breaks something in the bedroom and while she is cleaning, Surya gives her a helping hand. A confused Surya searches for words to tell her that his ex girlfriend is in their house. When he is about to tell her, Jyothika gives him his old diary. Consequently, there are emotional outbursts. The pinnacle is when she says that she wants her husband wholly and he must not have any unsatisfied desires. His one unsatisfied desire that he could not live with Bhoomika even after a namesake marriage. In his diary, he voices out his mind that even if he lives with her for a day it is as if living with her for ages makes a twist to Jyothika’s reactions.
It is but natural that the family unites again. The songs are okay and the memorable one is Munbe Vaa. The story line is excellent. However, the director should have concentrated on dialogues and the treatment of the story. Words like those that machaan could have been avoided and Surya’s Saturday night parties. Perhaps, with refined dialogues it would have been better. Vadivelu and Santhanam’s comedies are just fillers to attract the other segment of moviegoers. The movie would have been exclusively for multiplexes if the director had truncated Santhanam. His jokes are very perverted and I wonder why director had to show a peeing scene and Santhanam’s comments. Beyond doubts, it is very repulsive. With people like Santhanam on the prowl, neat comedy (if exists) will exit again.
Surya could have been portrayed as an executive in some MNC than a mechanic. If such kind of finesses were added to this movie, it would have been better and close to perfect. To make these kinds of films on par with Mouna Raagam, Anjali, Alaipayuthe, Masoom, the director must have concentrated on building up the script and dialogues especially. With elements of refinement, it would have been more contemporary. As mentioned above, without Santhanam the movie would have been better. There is no unity of place. The movie shifts from Mumbai to Ambasamudram only for Vadivelu jokes. Suganya has a cameo role. Several questions arise on handling certain scenes. A very glaring one being the sudden entry of the little girl in the climax. The movie if pruned, edited, and reshot with a few scenes would have been exclusively for the multiplexes.
I am not surprised that some crazy fans threw akshadai on the screen. Nowhere can one find such a crazy fan following like TN. Alas! I miss home.
I am posting this review here again. There are two sections for this movies review. One it is Silinnu or Kadhal and another Jillunu oru Kaadhal. MS can merge both.
