I was almost cursing myself and my friends because I intended to
see Signs first day first show. Total filmi ishtyle. But got an
opportunity just tonight to go watch the film.

First
of all in its first week last show itself the theatre was
more than half empty. Which was a spooky feeling.

So the film begins with a still very good-looking Mel Gibson getting
up from sleep very startled. The first scene manages to put you in a
mood as to what the film has to offer. Unfortunately the film doesn’t
keep up to it for various reasons.

The negative aspects:
1. The use of background score
At some points there is dead silence which does manage to create the scary
effect especially if it is followed by a dog’s bark or the movement in the
crops. And in contrast there are some places where there is loud background
score used to create the same effect. It is kind of irritating.

2. The Extra terrestrial theory
Are we still living in the 80s? Whatever made Manoj choose a passe subject like
that beats me. And to add to that he shows a creature that is like a skeleton.
Expected something more sensible than that.

3. Debutant actor
The director Manoj himself makes a debut in a small but important role. Whose idea
was it is what I would like to know. He is very conscious in front of the camera.
Couldn’t he just hire another actor? And people criticize Subhash Ghai for making
brief appearances in his films.

The positive aspects:
1. Characters
Although the screenplay doesn’t establish the characters at the outset of the film.
Each character in the film is established at various stages in the film in a very nice
way.

2. Relationship between the father and the son
The love-hate relationship between Mel Gibson and his son is beautifully portrayed. Especially
the scene at the dinner table is one that really touches you.

3. Relationship between the two brothers
The words spoken are very few. But again there is this one scene where his younger brother asks
him ’Can’t you be your old self?’ And Mel explains a theory to him about when you see signs, there
are ways you can interpret it.
Do you believe in miracles and see signs as one?
It is indeed a miracle that this film has done so well in the US and is still topping the charts. As for me,
I guess I’d rather watch Sixth Sense on DVD another time again.
