John Matthew Matthan made Sarfarosh few years back and created a top ranking position for himself in the Indian cinema. He returns back with his new film “SHIKHAR” with handsome
Ajay Devgan, neighbourhood door boy look Shahid Kapoor, and the sexy sirens Bipasha Basu and Amrita Rao.
Stylishly John Matthan sends out the message of environmental preservation. He emphasises on the need to curb down the cutting of trees to build multiplexes and townships. He takes up the issue of homeless tribal folk duped into selling their land and the havoc in climatic conditions (just go in your flash back about Tsunami/Floods at Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai and USA) and you will know that John Matthan knows how to be realistic stylishly.
He preaches his message about environmental preservation without any “item number” and the most unbelievable part is that he is having Bipasa Basu and Amrita Arora not as sexy sirens just to show off their assets but to show their talent.
It has music by Viju Shah who have to his credit the musical score for Rajiv Rais Asambhav. The album opens with a ‘dhamaal’ number “FITNA DIL” which is a foot tapping number. One can see the promos where Ajay-Shahid-Bipasha are making merry in a night club. Going by the present trend this peppy number appears again in a remixed version in the album. The word ‘fitna’ means temptation, trial, enchantment. The term fitna most often is used to describe civil war in the sense of temptation between mans wealth and children and this suits the storyline of SHIKHAR as the “SHIKHAR” is the peak of good deeds and thoughts on one hand and the elevation of ambition and greed on the other.
The “DHEERE DHEERE” number appears twice in the album by Sunidhi Chauhan and KK respectively. Both the versions are sung beautifully and reminds you of the old era of songs where lyrics, their words and melody used to be at the ‘shikhar’.
“MERE MANN” is a romantic number and for a change we have a song which can be heard again and again without using the Fast Forward button. Jagjit Singh is Jagjit Singh and when he sings the devotional number “TU HAI SHIKHAR” you can’t imagine of a any other singer putting life in the words penned by Sudhakar Sharma. One salutes the guts of John Matthan to have a modern storyline which deals with the battle of an highly ambitious man v/s nature and have a beautiful devotional song in it.
Another romantic number ‘”AAP KO SAMJHA HAI” again a melodious song. And as compared to all other numbers in the album this is an average song.
The other two songs “MEGHA MEGHA” and “VAGA” needs to be seen because it is a film by John Mathew Matthan and he is known for giving different treatment to the songs. John Matthan knows how to inter woven the musically treated songs in his exciting and interesting creative work.
The response to the films music, despite the low-key music release is exceptionally good. In the words of John Mathew Matthan, “We quietly released it in the market yesterday and the cassettes are selling like hot cakes. It indicates the pre-release curiosity and the success of the films promos, He further reveals that the film has an unusual musical score. Incidentally, the music of SHIKHAR has been composed by a first-time director P. Sameer and Mani Shankar, with Viju Shah treating the music of the film. It is a new concept in music composition and the musical score itself is a totally novel one, he adds.
