So far I've traveled only in sleeper trains for long distance. Last weekend I had to visit Chennai, I booked shatabdi express. Eventhough I felt its a bit expensive, thought of giving it a try since I never travelled in shatabdi before.
The coaches of shatabdi were awesome. They were brand new. To look from outside they were like foriegn train coaches. We checked the manufacturing date of our coach, it was April 2009. I never expected indian railway to be so cool. Food served during travel is also good.
Train crew will never let you do anything else other than eating(That was quite irritating though). Even if you are sleeping, they will wake you up and feed something :P
Journey took 5Hrs for only 360KM distance, which I felt was a bit slow. I expected shatabdi to be faster. On my way back from Chennai, which was again in shatabdi. The train for my return journey was typical indian train. It was dusty from outside and coach looked 15yrs old.
I wondered how will it look from inside. It was slightly better than normal passenger trains. Once again the food served was good and so was the service of train crew. I felt train crew were more courteous than adamant air hostesses. Overall my first experience with shatabdi express was good.
