I still remember it was 1982 and Shakti
had released in mumbai….i might have been around 11 years of age at
that time and a hard core Amitabh fan….which I am till today….the
tickets for the movie were booked at gaiety theatre at bandra by my mom's
very dear friend geeta aunty and she reached late and we missed the
movie by around 17 odd mts….and v caught up
from the kitchen scene where Rakhee is making garam garm aaloo ka
paratha's and Dilip Kumar is enjoying disturbing her….
U
guys mite b wondering how well I remember all this….well guys there are
certain films which remain with u for the rest of ur lives and I am
happy that in my case its Shakti….u need to believe the fact that I
have seen this movie exactly 85 times since 1982 including the last time it was shown on Sony Sab….
The
film can be truly described as the "Clash of two Superstars" because
for the first time in their careers Amitabh and the Dilip Kumar had
shared screen space together. In fact, it was their first and last film
together…. after growing up and bieng a part of the film industry
during discussions what I hear now is that Shakti was supposed to be
the most awaited film of its times as Amitabh and Dilip Kumar were
starring opposite each other for the first time….remember the craze of
Saudagar(when Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar came together after 32 odd
years) it was same craze as that for Shakti….also Actually Shakti was
promoted as an action movie at the time of its release but I after
watching it so many times strongly feel that it is a very very intense
and well executed emotional drama successfully directed by Ramesh
Sippy…. This film is a true and factual reflection of how a man falls
victim to circumstances….
The highlight of the film
without any doubt are Amitabh and Dilip Kumar….the love hate
relationship which Amitabh has for his father because of his principled father's
loyalty towards his job – the police force - loyalty which is not
shaken even when Vijay(Amitabh) Son of Sheetal(Rakhee) and Ashwani
Kumar(Dilip Kumar) is kidnapped by J.K.Verma(Amrish Puri) who
threatens to kill Vijay if one of his aidees Yeshwant(Goga Kapoor) was
not released from police custody….Ashwani Kumar(Dilip Kumar) reacts
strongly and tells J.K. to go ahead and kill his son but he will not
release Yeshwant….this conversation is over heard by Vijay and he
develops a dislike for his father…. Vijay grows up hating everthing
his dad stood for, and turns to crime
U vil get
the basic idea of the whole film from this one of the many fav scenes
from Shakti Where totally sloshed Bachchan is talking to Smita and says
"Jaanti ho Roma(Smita Patil)….Mere Baap ne do shaadiyaan ki
hain….do….ek meri maa se aur doosri apni naukri se….Apni maa ka beta
main hun aur meri sauteli maa…yaane mere baap ki doosri biwi ka beta
hai kaanoon….kaanoon….kaanoon mera sautela bhai hai….sautela
bhai….(laughs a loud and again says) sautela bhai….main toh wahan se
bhaag aaya par meri sauteli maa aur mere sautele bhai ne meri maa ko
mere baap ke ghar ke andar qaid kar rakha hai…."
If
I start to write about Shakti 50 pages would also be less….if you want
to see conflicts of ideologies of a father and a son….U have to see
Shakti….if U want to see a balanced affection of a woman for her
Husband and Son….U have to see Shakti….if U wanna see an apt Script
and Screenplay at its best….U have to see Shakti….if U wanna see
Cinematography par excellence(considering the equipments available in
1982)….u have to see Shakti….Editing….directors taking….all the
departments of film making….my god its all awesome….above all……if U
wanna submerge in the musical magic of panchamda with songs like
"Maangi thi ek Dua jo kabool ho gayi….", "Humne sanam ko khat likha….",
"Jaane kaise kab kahan ikraar ho gaya…." And even the title theme of
Shakti which plays in the background of core scenes is a class
apart….U have to see Shakti….
Rakhee's
character Sheetal is another one worth mentioning….a mother a wife and
entangled between the love hate relation of father and son….still so
balanced….but once her son takes to crime she declines his request to
help her….this small little scene where Vijay comes to see her when she
is ill and says "Maa dekho tum kitni kamzor ho gayi ho…chalo mere saath
chal kar raho….and Sheetal replies "nahi beta kamzor ho gayi hun lekin
itni kamzor nahi ki apne pati ki imaandaari ka bojh naa utha sakun…."
Imagine the temperature of the scene and like this there are so many
scenes which are out of this world seriously….
Smita
Patil as Roma is too cool….a tailor made role for her….she has
convingly played the roles of a lover, a wife, a bahu and later on as a
mother of Vijays child which is a small yet impressive role played by
Anil Kapoor….
Wheneva
I watch Shakti I find something new in it….ab toh after growin up I see
all the small small technical details which interest me……I can seriously
go on and on about Shakti but believe me u have to see it to believe
every word of mine….
I
have written so much about it in this review and after 85 views of this
film I still think I mite have missed good amount of points ……I vil for
sure come back if I remember anything else….may be my 86th view vil open up chances of a review again……
SHAKTI a real and genuine collectors item and above all A Must Must Mast Mast see doston….
