Let us diverge for a moment..........Step off the well lit path into the dark woods, where the pale pale light of the dying moon cannot filter through, where you can hear the rustle of leaves, the crack of a twig breaking, where a cold wind caresses the back of your neck and something flickers off the path in the corner of your eye. You start to run, terror weakens you, the blood drains from your brain and you stumble... you drag yourself up and rush to your door, fumble with the key with a feeling of absolute terror numbing your senses. You open you door, slam it shut and pull the bolts and breathe a sigh of relief and you flick the lights.
The darkness stays.
And then you hear a dry whisper, a stifled chuckle somewhere behind you which makes your skin crawl...................
There is a line between terror and horror and it is NOT fine. Stephen King lets you experience what terror is all about. Terror is about the strange sound downstairs in the living room in the middle of the night, terror is about switching of the lights and sliding into bed, and finding someone already there.......
Stephen Kings tale about how vampires take over a small sleep American town leaves you wondering whether it is wise to get out of bed to use the toilet in the middle of the night, it makes you wonder whether you should, in fact, go out in the night on the verandah to pick up the book you had left on the table, or take that short walk through the park or woods, or even walking across the lawn to the neighbours house in the dark.........
Stephen Kings novel is the definitive terror novel and not only a must read, but a must have.. For those of you who have not read King, this is the place to start. While you are at it, check out the movie ''Silver Bullet''
