I recently watched saawariya at home on my laptop. (Yes, I must admit, I watched it from some online download movie site.) Shame on me!

But

after I had finished the movie and the credits were rolling, I was so glad I didn’t go to the theatre to watch it. It was absolutely horrible.i honestly didn’t like it.

So much has been written about the divali releases- saawariya and om shanti om, but oso definitely comes up tops in the battle. I watched oso in the cinema and I was pleasantly surprised, it was really entertaining- good songs, good acting and an interesting storyline. It wasn’t great cinema or some groundbreaking cinematic experience but it did fulfill what it set out to do- entertain!color explodes in yr face and shah rukh displays his hard earned Pecs. But behind the shine, the 70’s color, the bell bottoms and bad hair, oso makes u laugh and cry. That’s a good sign. But deepika needs to learn to act and fast. No matter what the reviews and her well wishers are saying, she can’t act. Her role was small and doesn’t give much scope to display her acting skills. The only scene where she could show off her acting prowess, she fails miserably. I was laughing when she was screaming for om when the studio was burning down.

Well anyway coming back to saarwariya, throughout the movie I felt nothing. I just sat astonished on how slb could have spent so much of money, time and effort to create this iconic waste of energy. Do you know how many poor Indian villages could have been financed with the amount of money that went into this movie? It’s sad. Thousands of poor children could have received proper education with the movie’s budget. The sets are mindblowing, but the sets don’t make a film, a script does, actors do. There was absolutely no script, boy loves girl, but girl loves someone else. That sums it up actually. Even the sets gets on your nerves after awhile, arched bridges, a Buddha statue, gondolas, a very fake looking mosque. Nothing gels, it just feels so weird.

I really don’t see the hoo hah over ranvir kapoor is? Is he that good? Or is it just his lineage that’s propping him up? He is earnest, yes, but a good actor, no. if people equal his towel scene to acting, then I think they should drown themselves. Maybe it’s just a bad role. He is a club singer but if he is with sonam every night, how does he work? Strange.I do think the best debut male for this year, has to be neil mukesh in Johnny gaddar. He was fantastic and the movie groundbreaking. Pity it didn’t do well but I recommend it to anyone looking for a excellent piece of cinema- great acting, great script and great direction.

Sonam kapoor is sweet and very young. She has been to compared to waheeda rehman, juhi chawla and tabu. But she doesn’t have the inherent magic these beautiful ladies possess. She in fact reminds me of soha ali khan. She has room for improvement and in time, she will. The role suited her to an extent and it also let her down in most parts. She falling in love with salman khan was a letdown. Who in the right mind fall in love with a man, they don’t know anything about? And does anyone realize that sonam is young enough to be salman’s daughter? Salman khan sleepwalks through his role and reminds me of jack the ripper walking the London streets.

The person I found sparkling in her small role was rani. It wasn’t one of her best, far from it but comparing the rest of the crew, she was fantastic. She was sexy, naughty, and acid tongued yet with a heart of gold.

Saarwariya doesn’t compare to slb’s previous outings, it has the same cinematic liberties, tortured heroines with flowing robes running along corridors, candles and operatic narration. I enjoyed it in some of his movies- black, devdas, hddcs but in saawariyaa it has become its downfall. I still await his next movie and I do hope it doesn’t let me down again.
