Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Raj Kapoor’s grandson, Anil kapoor’s daughter, great music - excellent receipe for success you think ? Unfortunately it’s not quite so. Instead what you get is Sanjay
Leela Bhansali trying to remove Raj Kapoor from his system (one cannot help but recall Raj Kapoor’s ’Sapno Ka Saudagar), Ranbir Kapoor not at all convinced himself about the role and Sonam lost in drapes of clothes and long hair.

What is disappointing is the total lack of reality and plausibility in the plot. The brooding, dark sets, the long hair, and even longer dresses worn by the heroine make the movie stifiling. Worse the common man and woman simply do not identify with the cast. The biggest faux pas was releasing Saawariya as competition to Om Shanti Om as a Diwali release. During the holidays people like to look at happy, goofy, masala  movies like Om Shanti Om not unhappy people in, unhappy movies.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali claims Saawriya as by far his best movie but we think he is capable of much, much more. Maybe if he had released it sometime during the year when there weren’t many movies lined up for release, people could have made an attempt to look at the visual poetry which Mr. Bhansali wanted to create. The saving grace however is the beautiful music and the background score. Rani Mukherjee proves that she is a seasoned actress. Ranbir Kapoor shows a lot of promise and so does Sonam.

Saawariya has a weak base, add to that the sky high expecttations from the director to the cast bog down the movie making it one of the most disappointing movies of 2007. In other words its like poetry in Latin. People can make out that its poetry but do not understand a word of it leave alone the feelings of the director.
