BREIFING AND LEARNINGS:
Gates divided hi book in 12 sections in which he describe what the future looks like with IT boom according to his prediction. The different sections are:
1. A REVOLUTION BEGINS: In this section he describes about how MICROSOFT started, use of computers came into being in past and how he got fascinated toward it.
2. THE BEGINNING OF INFORMATION AGE:Here he told about the various improvements in hardware and software fields and the coming of INFORMATION AGE rather saying COMPUTER ERA. Also about the interactive networks i.e. internet and information highway.
3. LESSONS FROM COMPUTER INDUSTRY: This section tells about the negative and positive feedback cycle. IBM was leading the computer market but later lost its market and got caught in negative spiral. While Microsoft grew itself with MS-DOS and later Windows.
4. INFORMATION APPLIANCES AND APPLICATION:In this section we got to know about the killer applications of internet like communication and how television came into existence and its importance. Apart from that different applications like wallet pc and pen-based pc, security of information etc.
5. FROM INTERNET TO HIGHWAY:Here he tells about moving from ‘internet’(narrow band interactive network) to ‘highway’(broadband interactive network) with innovative and creative ideas with optimistic attitude.
6. THE CONTENT REVOLUTION: In this section he tells how broadband network will revolutionize the life of common people in various sectors like communication multimedia etc i.e. sets the base for the modern society.
7. BUSINESS ON THE INTERNET: Here he tells how internet will renovate the business field and its advantages.
8. FRICTION-FREE CAPITALISM: In this section he tells about the investment in the different companies whether are small companies or market leaders and the influence of broadband network, e-commerce, on-line banking etc.
9. EDUCATION-THE BEST INVESTMENT: Gates here is telling about the best way to create modern society is to get the youngsters well acquaintance with computer and internet i.e. to build an infrastructure that would help to learn computer education.
10. PLUGGED IN AT HOME: He mentions the ultra-modern, technology-driven house that he was designing and building then in the last years of the 20th century. He talks about how he and his(now) wife Melinda used to communicate on email during their courtship period. And several other interesting facts like this which gives us an insight into the man that is Bill Gates.
11. THE INTERNET GOLD RUSH:Here he mentions viewpoint of different countries towards the development of broadband network. The possible ways to make it accessible to common people and in the reach of rural areas.
12. CRITICAL ISSUES:Till now he has been very optimistic about the effects of the broadband network in the future but here he discuss about the possible vital concerns which could be harmful to society and approaches to handle it.
VOCABULARY:This book is written in very plain English with minimum use of complex words or sentences. An internet enthusiast will find it very interesting but a lay person also can comprehend it without much of difficulty as he hasn’t gone too deep in technical aspect of internet or computer as a whole.
STYLE OF WRITING
:Gates has basically written about his vision and started with providing the base the gradually moving to broad view of his vision.With the help of different incidents he described the importance of the vision or what he sees the future to be which makes it interesting.
