I am now seventy years old. I began reading the readers digest about sixty years ago. At that time and for many years after The Readers Digest lived up its' name - a digest of all the best articles. The editors selected the best articles from other publications each month and condensed them for the reader into one publication. The name of each arcticle and the source from which it was taken was listed on the front cover. The articles were factual and promoted traditional American values.
The magazine has kept its name but has now moved completely away away from it's original mission. It ino longer pretends to be a "digest" of other publications. The index has disappeared from the cover. It is now just another mediocore magazine filled with opinions and suppositions mixed with facts. The values are more "modern media" than "traditional American". I have heard that the Readers Digest is struggling financially. No wonder! In our age of information explosion there is more need now than ever for a REAL Readers Digest. Perhaps some other publication will pick up on this once extremely successful idea. I miss them.
