I’m glad no one wrote on this one. It happens to be one of my all time favourite movies. Not for the story, not for the lavish sets but for two reasons - that exquisite woman called Hema Malini and
that Khayyam-Lata Mangeshkar masterpiece ’’AYE DIL-E-NADAAN’’

I watched this movie in the eighties. It was based on the story of Razia Sultana, daughter of the king Iltutmush, who was the first woman ruler of India (and most of Asia as well). When Iltutmush died, he picked Razia over his sons, to rule the dynasty, a move that caused lot of commotion among the nobility.

The Movie
=====================

Razia Sultan was a big budget movie, consisting of lavish sets that replicated the architecture and ambience of the era and a cast consisting of powerhouses like Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Pradeep Kumar, Parveen Babi,Ajit etc.

The story revolves around Hema Malini who plays the tile role. Although the story is one from history, director Kamal Amrohi (who also wrote the story) focuses on Razia’s love affair with an Assyrian slave called YAKUT (played by Dharmendra who had to go through the grief of painting himself black to look the part).

The movie is tragic as Razia Sultan faces a lot of hostile entities and dies fighting.

The movie was also tragic for Kamal Amrohi. It failed miserably. Perhaps it was released in the wrong year or maybe the public couldnt digest a movie that took an eternity to move along.

Reasons to watch this movie
==============================

Lavish sets? Romantic vibes? The historical value?

Watch this for those two reasons I mentioned at the beginning of the review - The sheer beauty of that woman called Hema Malini... and AYE DIL E NADAAN...

Beautifully penned and portrayed, this song is a visual and aural treat. It was reason enough to give this movie 4 stars.

aye dil-e-nadaan
aye dil-e-nadaan
aarzoo kya hai
justuju kya hai
