Visited Rann of Kutch in Gujrat during end October 2012. Rann of Kutch is a vast flat land remains under water for approx. half of the year and gets dried up from September onwards till next monsoon. This is an unique and amazing place in the world. The rann has no habitation in most of its areas.
We went to Little rann first. Wild as s sanctuary is inside little rann. Wild as s is only available in this place. We had booking in a resort "Desert Coursers" in Zainabad, which is 120 KM from Ahmedabad by road. The resort is inside a village at the border of little rann with beautiful ambience. You can book a hut with modern facility. They provide food and arrange jeep safari to wild as s sanctuary and little rann. You can see rare wild as s and flamingo and roam around the huge terrain. Wild as s runs very fast @ 60-70 kmph and you can see such run when your jeep moves beside them. Can't get experience of this nature at any other place. Next day we went to Great Rann of Kutch by road. We had booking at Dhordo resort in the middle of great rann. This is the last village and beyond it is a vast white rann, an amazing place of the world. A vast area remains under sea water during monsoon and gets dried up slowly leaving the salt behind. During the course of years, this huge flat land had been covered with salt and became white. we were there in the full moon night and experienced the rare beauty of the mother nature when the entire area was looking like covered with silver lining. One should visit this place during full moon or near to full moon to experience the real beauty. In end October, large area was yet to be dried up totally. So visit during January or February may be more beautiful. We stayed in Dhordo resort managed by village panchayet. This is a nice resort with individual A/C hut. They provide food. The place is very clean and service is excellent. They also arranged cultural programme in the evening with local Kutch singers. The atmosphere was charming. Cost Rs.3800/- per A/c hut for 2 persons inclusive of food.
We visited nearby "Kala Dunger", a hill from where you can have a glimpse of the huge white rann from top. This place is near India bridge and India-Pakisthan border. Public can't proceed beyond India bridge and is under BSF control. You should have a vehicle with you to visit the Rann of Kutch, otherwise it is difficult to move around.
In general, vist to Rann of Kutch was a great experience. One can't see such beauty of mother nature in any other place. If you are a nature lover and enjoy the beauty of silence, this is the place to visit.
In white rann, Gujrat tourism conduct Rann Utsab during December-January, when large gathering is expected. My personal openion and advice is not to go there during rann utsab, because you will miss the real beauty of silence and solitude.
