A commercial venture into the Radio Entertainment industry by Satellite Television Asian Region (STAR) Ltd. resulted in the addition of the station Radio City to the airwaves in Mumbai. Their tag line
reads: ’’Fun ka dose. Har roz’’

A short while back while still in its inception, Radio City had struggled to make the mark. Poor RJs, poorer quality of shows had seen Radio City compete and compete hard for its place in the radio market. It wasn’t long before ’Pop-stars’ Viva made waves on the Indian music scene and around the same time Radio city found its flagged fortunes started looking up. Suddenly Radio City was in demand, people were tuning in to listen and there was a better response for generic call-in shows than ever before.

I like to listen to Radio City especially at night when they have this program called ’’Four-play’’ when they play four songs one after the other, four nostalgic songs or four songs which were immensely popular though the films or albums containing them were not. No RJs during this night shift except a show featuring Anuraag Pande where he plays splendid gahzals and nazms by eminent singers such as Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali and such names.

On a flip-side, Radio City has programs dedicated to music and not the masses which has a shaky opinion on hits and misses. Irrespective of the volatile opinions about modern songs with respect to hits and misses, they play ’hit’ songs sometimes as old as the fifties and sometimes as new as yesterday. The choice of RJs is definitely good and the song selection has improved greatly over the last few months.

On the flop-side, the station ID is a little irritant and it tends to get on your nerves after a while. Plus, the ads on the radio are always irritating, but since you have to put up with such kind of nonsense for all the stations, it acts as a very small but substantial deterrent. The RJs are good but sometimes, they are a little on the fast side.

All in all, RC is a station that I would turn on at any time of the day and still expect something nice and soothing to be going on, even if it is only the voice of an RJ...

Who is your favorite Radio Jockey? Anuraag Pande
Program Cycle: Never hear any repeats at all
Commercial Interruption: Medium length breaks heard twice
