It started and it ended. Ranveer (Saif Ali Khan) was the winner when it began and he ended as a winner too. Totally flawless, a man with no loops at all. No dirt’s to gain over him. They say that destiny
prefers the ones who dare and our main cast of the movie Ranveer was one of those. Just everything was perfect with him and the situations worked to make him win the race of life against his wicked brother Rajeev (Akshaye Khanna).
Don’t worry; this is not going to kill any suspense of the movie as it had none to bank upon. Everything was so very predictable about the story. The death of Ranveer, the group effort of Rajeev and Ranveer’s secretary Sophia (Katrina Kaif), reappearance of Ranveer and his pairing with Sonia(Bipasha Basu). Everything was just perfectly known by the viewers. The only shock that we can get is by discovering R.D. (Anil Kapoor) to be a disloyal cop who can easily be bought.
After “Naqaab” and “Race” it is clear now that we can’t expect any serious suspense thriller from the director duo Abbas-Mustan. They have mastered on the craft of being predictable and relieving all the mystery when you are just twenty percent through their flicks.
So what is the positive things on which Race is going to rely upon?
This doesn’t mean that the movie is not one time watchable one too. With the beautiful South African locations, the most glamorous star cast of bollywood, the intelligent dialogue writing and good background score, the two and half hours race is peaceful.
Saif is again comes out as master while enacting his character. “Omkara” was surely not a miracle. Saif deserves all the applause again for his act in Race too.
Akshaye as always is the cute and handsome villain with a big brain to bank upon but the character seems to be very closely related to the one he played in “Humraaz”.
Bipasha Basu is again bankable in the same ways as she was in “Ajnabee”, her debut movie with Abbas-Mustan. She looks sexy probably much more than the character demands.
Katrina Kaif again proves that apart from looking beautiful and hot she can act too.
Anil Kapoor is the real winner here. He with his sense of humor relaxes the story which could have become really a painful one to watch with all the planning going on. He enters the story just before the interval with his secretary Mini (Sameera Reddy) and gains all the attention from then to the last. Though 50, Anil looks not older than his much younger co stars Saif and Akshaye. Hats off to you Anil for adding the comic flavor in Race.
Sameera is rarely visible among the much qualified star cast and the innocence of her character irritates.
The music by Pritam is good but the songs are misplaced and forced. A thriller is in no need of six songs.
On the whole Race is one time watchable but not a compulsory one. If you have enough money and time, you can relax on a multiplex seat with a pop corn and a soft drink watching the Race between the two brothers.
