The very idea of a street hooker falling in love with a rich industrialist makes for a very compelling subject. And it has been deftly handled by the director Gary Marshall who went on to later direct the
same pair in Runaway Bride.Which just goes to show that real magic occurs only once even with the same starcast.Julia Roberts shot to fame with this romantic caper whereas Richard Gere was still fresh in the minds of viewers worldwide from An Officer and a Gentleman. The movie had the perfect recipe for a hit and it really worked wonders at the box office. The two of them coming together was as unlikely as chalk and cheese but love is such a unifying factor that it brings the most unlikeliest elements together. The first contact with the so called society of the hooker are very superbly handled.I simply cannot forget the scene where the store owner refuses her entry simply because she does not belong there. And the one where she makes a fool of herself at the race course. When the hotel manager teaches the routine table manners it makes for touching viewing. It is heartening to know that hookers are considered as humans and not garbage and they are accepted into society. But all this is fantasy. In real life there are very few examples which can be quoted. As for myself I have been privileged to see such a thing happen in real life and both of them are living a very happy life.God Bless and Touch Wood.
